I
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never smile again
Until I smile at you
I'll never laugh again
What good would it do
For tears would fill my eyes
My heart would realize
That our romance is true
I'll never love again
I'm so in love with you
I'll never thrill again
To somebody new
Within my heart
I know I will never start
To smile again
Until I smile at you

Within my heart
I know I will never start

To smile again
Until I smile at you

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song, "I Never Knew," is a heartfelt ode to lost love, longing, and the impossibility of moving on. The opening lyrics, "I'll never smile again / Until I smile at you," articulate the singer's devastation at the end of their relationship. Without the other person, nothing brings them joy or laughter. The following lines continue to build on this theme, with the singer stating, "For tears would fill my eyes / My heart would realize / That our romance is true." In this moment, the singer acknowledges the depth of their love and how it is a pain to know that it is now over.

The chorus repeats the sentiment expressed in the first lines, "I'll never love again / I'm so in love with you," taking us back to the central theme of the song: the overwhelming feeling of heartbreak and the inability to move on. The next lines, "I'll never thrill again / To somebody new," further emphasize this point. The singer has no interest in anyone else - their love for the one who left is all-encompassing. The final lines of the chorus, "Within my heart / I know I will never start / To smile again / Until I smile at you," highlight the fact that the singer's happiness is entirely dependent on the other person's return.

Ultimately, "I Never Knew" is an achingly beautiful song that speaks to the pain of lost love and the longing for its return. The lyrics cut straight to the heart of the matter, conveying a depth of emotion that few songs can match.

Hello. I am 88 years old and grew up loving and dancing to the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Bring back the good old days of great music like Glenn Miller and all the Big Bands. Thanks for the memories.

I am 83 years and this is the music I still listen now, in Spain where I live, instead of watching all bad news on television. I start with country music at 7. am, and in the afternoon I listen these relaxing music of big bands of the 40. All this beauiful music is nice to listen.

If you don't already know of them may I suggest the group of people (young students) in Barcelona, called the Sant Andreu Jazz band taught by Joan Chamorro. Wonderful musicians playing the old and great standards we love. I'm an old guy too 79 yrs. Sooo...born in early 1944 l am lucky to have see and heard many phases of music thru the years to today. There is not one that doesn't electrify the moment when you re-hear it . Like now for example. Very emotional.

[Menchu] Can't tell you how much I love your post. It does sadden me though. As someone who lives in America, Washington State to be exact, to think how a corrupt America can effect even people in Spain is, well-- you know.
