In an Old Dutch Garden
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

In an old Dutch garden by an old Dutch mill
Where the moon was dreaming on a distant hill
When a smile danced by it was then that I
Saw heaven in a pair of wooden shoes

In an old Dutch garden where the tulips grow
That's when first I whispered that I love you so
For my heart was blue till I gave it to
An angel in a pair of wooden shoes

Then one sad day
When summer meets September
I sailed away from a thrill I will remember
In an old Dutch garden by an old Dutch mill

Every day I pray that you are waiting still

For my heart will yearn until I return
To heaven in a pair of wooden shoes!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "In an Old Dutch Garden" describe a picturesque scene in a traditional Dutch setting. The singer sets the stage in an old Dutch garden near a windmill, with the moon casting its dreamy light on a distant hill. It is in this serene atmosphere that the singer catches a glimpse of something extraordinary - a smile that dances by, leading them to witness heaven itself within a pair of wooden shoes.

The mention of an old Dutch garden where tulips grow signifies the beauty and vibrancy of the surroundings. It is in this enchanting place that the singer finds the courage to confess their love to someone special, bringing color to their previously blue heart. The recipient of this love is referred to as an angel, symbolizing their pure and heavenly nature.

However, happiness in this idyllic setting is not destined to last forever. The song introduces a moment of sorrow when summer fades away into September, signifying the passage of time and the inevitability of change. The singer is forced to sail away from their love, creating a bittersweet separation. Yet, they hold on to the hope that their beloved, represented by the old Dutch garden, will wait for their return. The singer's heart will yearn until they are reunited, longing for the heavenly bliss they once experienced in the presence of their love, portrayed metaphorically as heaven within a pair of wooden shoes.

Disques Swing 13

One fine day at least 10 years ago I had the misfortune to drive through the Dutch city of Maastricht and this was during the time the present super highway there was being built. It took over half an hour to crawl through the rush hour traffic that was also a long construction zone. I realized I had a Glenn Miller CD in the car so I put in in the player. That CD had this song on it. I turned off the AC and put the windows down and touched the Auto Repeat button so the song would repeat endlessly and it did. I got a few strange looks from other motorists and a wave or two along the way. Great fun and an excellent way to deal with the traffic jam.

By the way, this was recorded in1939, before Miller's band reached the height of it's popularity as he really hit the big time in 1940. I've liked this tune a lot over the 50+ years I've spent as a Glenn Miller fan
