Moon Love
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Will this be moon love
Nothing but moon love
Will you be gone when the dawn comes stealing through
Are these just moon dreams
Grand while the moon beams
But when the moon fades away
Will my dreams come true
Much as I love you
Don't let me love you
If I must pay for your kiss with lonely tears
Say it's not moon love

Tell me it's true love
Say you'll be mine when the moon disappears

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song Moon Love is a poignant ode to a love that exists only in the ephemeral realm of moonlight. The song opens with the singer questioning whether his love is real or if it's just a fleeting infatuation that will fade away with the dawn. He wonders if his deep feelings for his beloved are only apparent under the spell of the moon's beams, which create a romantic and mysterious ambiance that could perhaps fool him into thinking he's found the one.

In the second verse, the singer pleads with his love to be honest with him and not let him fall too deeply if their love is not meant to last. He doesn't want to pay with "lonely tears" for a love that is merely a figment of his imagination. He beseeches his love to tell him that it's not just a case of moon love, but that their feelings for each other are real and will endure even after the moon disappears.

The lyrics to Moon Love are a moving reminder of the often-fleeting nature of love and the importance of being honest with oneself and with the object of one's affections. The song's melody, with its soaring trumpet lines and lush harmonies, perfectly captures the yearning and romanticism of the lyrics.

Great sound quality indeed! I remember hearing this for the first time at a talent show, put on by high school students, in a program called STEP, or the Student Transition Enrichment Program, a program for blind and physically handicapped students that teaches them how to get jobs, prepare resumés, etc. This is a program here in L.A., at a facility called JBA, or Junior Blind of America. They get students who live in all parts of California, from Chino Hills to Bakersfield and beyond. But anyway, the night before our completion, we were able to put on a talent show. And much to my surprise, whoever it was, that provided the background music for the families, was playing Glenn Miller's tunes! You'd think they'd play Earth, Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin or something more familiar to the guests. But nope... All I heard was the smooth vocals of Bob Crosby or Ray Everly, one of Miller's vocalists playing off one of the students' computers before I went and introduced the first act of the night. Good times! Whoever it was that helped with the audiovisual elements of the show, must have great musical taste!
