Big Cig
The Hold Steady Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She says she always smoked cigarettes.
Ever since she was seven.
She always likes the big ones best.
You get more for yr money.

I know that she's gorgeous.
I can't take her serious.
She looks kinda ridiculous.
With her Malibu 120s.

Some nights she's a scientist.
She pulls me into experiments.
Squeezes hard and
Charts the forward progress.

Some nights she's a pharmacist.
She's got some pills some in her purse.
One to wake you up
One if yr nervous.
And I serve my purpose.

Burns on her skirt and smoke in her eyes.
I serve my purpose.
We power down and try to socialize.
I serve my purpose.
She can probably find a better guy
I serve my purpose.
She used to fool around with some friends of mine.

That's fine.
I mostly dig.
Her and her big cigs.

We met at a benefit.
It was a pretty big opening.
Her therapist says it's dangerous.
The way she seeks validation.

Some nights she's a magic trick.
Some nights she's a sinking ship.
She pokes around with a paper clip
She's the pistol at the party.
Once we get started

Burns on her skirt and smoke in her eyes.
I serve my purpose.
We power down and try to socialize.
I serve my purpose.
She can probably find a better guy.
I serve my purpose.
She used to fool around with some friends of mine.

That's fine.
I mostly dig.
Her and her big cigs.

I'm pretty sure we both agree.
We can both take some liberties.
We all have our anxieties.
This little tryst is hard to quit.
So we just sit here and live with it.

Burns on her skirt and smoke in her eyes.
I serve my purpose.
We power down and try to socialize.
I serve my purpose.
She can probably find a better guy.
I serve my purpose.
She used to fool around with some friends of mine.

It's not love.
It's not even a crush.
That's fine.

I mostly dig.
Her and her big cig.

Overall Meaning

In "Big Cig", The Hold Steady's Craig Finn tells the story of a woman who smoked cigarettes since the age of seven and "always likes the big ones best". Despite her beauty, the singer can't take her seriously and thinks she looks ridiculous with her Malibu 120s. He points out that some nights she's a scientist and runs experiments on him, while on other nights she acts as a pharmacist and provides him with pills for different purposes. Despite her habit causing burns on her skirt and smoke in her eyes, the singer enjoys spending time with her.

The lyrics suggest that the woman's smoking habit is just one part of her larger pattern of behavior seeking validation and experimenting with different roles. The singer seems to be aware that the relationship is not based on love or even a crush, but he enjoys her company and the persona that she presents.

I have, originally when I posted the songs the last 4 songs were blocked because Essential Music was claiming it had rights so it blocked it inUnited States and Canda however I left them on and after a week now all of them are fine apart from Runner's High, hopefully it'll sort itself out in a few days. But it is on there just blocked because Essential music is trying to stop it but Razor and Tie are allowing it everywhere so give it a few days otherwise I'll just try posting it again.
