The Swish
The Hold Steady Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pills and powders, baby, powders and pills
We spent the night last night in Beverly Hills
This chick, she looked just like Beverly Sills
We got killed

Tights and skirts, baby, skirts and tights
We used to shake it up in Shaker Heights
This chick, she looked just like Patty Smythe
She seemed shaky but nice

She said my name's Rick Danko, baby
People call me One-Hour Photo
I got some hazardous chemicals
So drive around to the window

She said my name's Robbie Robertson but people call me Robo
I blew red, white and blue right into a tissue
I came right over the counter just to kiss you

I came right over the counter just to kiss you

Ginger and Jack and four or five Feminax
Psycho eyes and a stovepipe hat
A ray of light from tight white rayon slacks
We got cracked

Shoes and socks, baby, socks and shoes
We spent the night last night in Newport News
This chick, she looked just like Elizabeth Shue
We got bruised

She said my name's Steve Perry, baby
People call me Circuit City
I'm so well connected
My UPC is dialed into the system

She said my name's Neal Schon but people call me Nina Simone
Some people call me Andre Cymone
'Cause I survived the '80s one time already
And I don't recall it all that fondly
So hold steady

It was a blockbuster summer
Moving pictures got us through to September
They made a movie about me and you
They made it half nude and half true

It was a bloodsucking summer
I spent half the time trying to get paid from our savior

Swishing though the City Center
I did a couple favors for these guys who looked like Tusken Raiders

Overall Meaning

In The Hold Steady's song "The Swish," the lyrics describe a night of drug-fueled debauchery across various locations in America. The chorus repeats "We got killed, we got bruised" implying the aftermath of the dangerous activities. The opening lines "Pills and powders, baby, powders and pills / We spent the night last night in Beverly Hills" set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer and an unknown female accomplice are consuming drugs and bouncing from place to place. The reference to Beverly Sills and Patty Smythe are allegories to the high society and glamour they are surrounded by at that moment.

The middle section of the song is a dialogue between the singer and another woman he meets, who references famous musicians Rick Danko and Robbie Robertson. The woman's name is Steve Perry but says that people call her Circuit City. A clever play on words implying that she has access to all sorts of drugs and connections. The woman then introduces herself again but this time as Neal Schon, the guitarist from Journey. She goes by Nina Simone for reasons unclear. The lyrics are hard to decipher, but they suggest that she had a difficult time in the '80s and doesn't remember it fondly.

The song's chorus repeats at the end, banging home the idea of the damage done during the night. The final section describes a summer in which the singer and his female companion become the subjects of a half-true or half-nude movie. The final lyric describing the singer doing favors for people who looked like Tusken Raiders, a reference to the sand people in Star Wars, adds to the mystique of the song's narrative.

this whole band is great, the music is so raw. and as for craigs voice, his voice is awesome!! plus the stuff he says its just perfect.

John_SigNu

gotta be honest, I as much as I like craig's vocals, it's the LYRICS that really get me. his storytelling is 10X more valuable than his voice

Kenneth Pounds

Incredible band live...saw them 4-5 times..they are back at it

Scott McMahon

Soooo good! Just discovered this song yesterday. Love it!

Akuzena

these guys are pretty inspiring. If that guy can make a band really good and sound good even if he can't sing, then why can't I? The lyrics are pretty amazing btw I just read them. He's got a lot to say for somebody that sings like a Bob Dylan with a different accent.

Jeff Maxwell

I didn't care much for this band until I saw them live. They're amazing. Now I like the records.

Oliver James

I know these guys are supposed to be a retro band, but doesn't anyone else kinda think that this is quite ahead of its times. the key change from verse to chorus are well daring, as are the lyrics.

yojayy

This is an old video..one of their first I think. That's their original drummer, Judd Counsell. Now they have 5 members. It just shows how bands evolve. I remember hearing Hurley mention them on an episode of LOST in a flashback episode (the one where he tells everyone he won the lottery using the cursed numbers).

martianshoes

Finn brings a lot of people to mind, early Elvis Costello... and Springsteen before the ice cream got to him. More please.. this is choice.

spoinkchick93

This and 'Stuck Between Stations' are my fave songs by them. Thanks for posting.
