Give the Music Back
The Hooters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They took the beat away, replaced it with machines
They took the words away, and threw 'em on a screen
They turned the switches on, and handed us the phones
They blasted out our ears with endless monotrones

Can you feel it, can you feel it
From a million miles away
Can you hear it, can you hear it
Gettin' louder every day
Give the music back
Give the music back
Give the music back, before it's gone
Give the music back
Give the music back
Put the music back into the song

They drove the blues away, and banished Rock 'n Roll
They cut away the heart, and sacrified the soul
They closed the disco's down, and shut off MTV
They locked the music up, and threw away the key

Can you feel it, Can you feel it
From a million miles away
Can you hear it, can you hear it
Gettin' Louder every day
Give the music back
Give the music back
Give the music back, Before it's gone
Give the music back
Give the music back
Put the music back into the song

And now a silence fills the room where once we sang
And all it's quiet where the chimes of freedom rang
Somewhere a pirateship is crashing through the waves
Sending a signal out, a battle to the grave

Give the music back
Give the music back
Give the music back, Before it's gone
Give the music back
Give the music back
Put the music back where it belongs

Give the music back (Ohh give it back)
Give the music back (Ohh give it back)
Give the music back, Before it's gone
Give the music back
Give the music back

Put the music back into the song
Before it's gone

Overall Meaning

The Hooters' song, Give the Music Back, is a passionate plea to restore music to its earlier form by abandoning the sophisticated technology that has replaced controlled beats, live music events, and melody in today's music industry. The song discusses the frustrations of the writer as he watches the gradual disappearance of musical genuineness, melody, and substance. The lyrics decry the replacement of conventional instruments with synthesized beats, lyrics and created melodies poured into a screen and delivered by phone, and performative elements relegated to the background by technological effects.

The writer sees the contemporary music industry as having lost its soul and spirit, with the heart and blues of rock n' roll gone, the disco era closed down, and everything going quiet. However, he highlights the hope that exists, with signs of a resurgence and a yearning for a return to traditional music that is upfront in the mix, honest and direct. The song implores the audience to join the fight to resurrect real music by coming together to put the music back in songs before it is lost entirely.

Πρώτη φορά το άκουσα. Ωραίοι στίχοι και ωραία μουσική, και μου έφερε και στο μυαλό τους Pink Floyd κάποιες στιγμές.

These guys were labelled by their early success as kiddie pop. It really damaged their career. Some great songs and talent was ignored afterwards.

I had never heard anything like that. I can't see what about their music would incite that kind of assessment. Do you happen to have any references to it?

Jason Barbush

always thought this song to be about the future when music is gone worst case scenerio in ones thinking.

Hello Skinny

This song predicted what happened to music after 1989

Even though I bought the song when it came it out on CD, it was the only one I didn't remember tonight at the concert in Esslingen, Germany, on 24.7.2022. But it made me cry because I thought it was a simply masterful comment on the musical times of Spotifiy. Another sign of how great and even prophetical the Hooters were as songwriters.

Jason Barbush

this song is kind of like what happened to MTV nowadays only reality shows and crap.
