Graveyard Waltz
The Hooters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was walkin' real fast, I was too scared to run
Past this lonesome graveyard where the highway meets the sun
Well that old graveyard's been around since the civil war
I had a feelin' that I'd been here before

I heard a voice, it was talkin' real slow
She said it's time to make a choice, is it yes or is it no
I said ok, do what you want to do
Then she took me to a world I never knew

Where we danced so close, we were teenage ghosts
We were doin' that graveyard waltz
After all is said and done we were just too young
To be doin' that graveyard waltz

Next thing I knew the first dance was done
But this magic carpet ride had just begun
Heaven only knows where she learned to drive
Between the tombstones and the ones still left alive

And then that old soul band began to play
In triple time, she was begging me to stay
And when the masquerade had started up again
She said this is the night that never ends

Where we danced so close, we were teenage ghosts
We were doin' that graveyard waltz
After all is said and done we were just too young
To be doin' that graveyard waltz

I was walkin' real fast, I was too scared to run

Overall Meaning

The Hooters' "Graveyard Waltz" opens with a sense of fear and apprehension as the singer walks past a graveyard at a fast pace, emphasizing his reluctance to be in this place. He mentions that the graveyard has been around since the Civil War, adding an eerie historical context to the setting. In the next verse, a female voice speaks to him, asking him to make a choice between "yes" or "no." He agrees to follow her, and is taken to a world he never knew. This world is where the "graveyard waltz" takes place, a dance with teenage ghosts. The singer acknowledges that they were too young to be participating in this dance, and the experience is both magical and haunting.

The lyrics in "Graveyard Waltz" evoke themes of fear, mortality, and the supernatural. The graveyard is a physical representation of death, and the singer's fear when passing by it alludes to the fear of the unknown that we all feel towards death. However, the presence of the ghostly female voice and the experience of the graveyard waltz suggest that death is not necessarily an end, but a transition to a different world. The dancing also represents a coming of age story, with the teenage ghosts symbolizing a universal desire to hold on to youth and the past. In the end, the song leaves us with a sense of ambiguity and mystery, challenging us to contemplate what lies beyond this life.

The Hooters were, have been and are always extremely good. We have to consider when these songs and albums came out and how young they were. "Satellite", "Karla with K", "Johnny B", "All you Zombies"....... many others and these "Graveyard Waltz", one of the best songs ever written! What great musicians and songwriters. And The Hooters can and love to play.

@dennygarnett9614
