Satellite
The Hooters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hush little baby don't cry like that
God's gonna buy you a Cadillac
he's chosen you to do his will
you can spread the world in your coupe de ville

so jump in the river and learn to swim
God's gonna wash away all your sins
and if you still can't see the light
God's gonna buy you a satellite

look to the heavens and see it shine
heals the sick and leads the blind
tune it in and hear it say
it's counting down to judgment day

so jump in the river

hey satellite man your time has come
your words received by everyone
and should you fall, well that's OK
you love the ones that you betray

so jump in the river and learn to swim
God's gonna take away all your sins

and when at last you see the light
God's gonna buy you a satellite

Overall Meaning

The Hooters' song Satellite is a poetic interpretation of a person's journey towards redemption and enlightenment. The lyrics encourage the listener to trust in the power of God and the potential for change, even in the darkest of times.

The song begins with a lullaby-like refrain, "Hush little baby don't cry like that, God's gonna buy you a Cadillac." This is a reference to the material wealth that religion often promises its followers in exchange for their faith. However, the subsequent lines suggest that there is more to life than just accumulating possessions. "He's chosen you to do his will, you can spread the world in your coupe de ville." The car becomes a metaphor for the individual's ability to spread a positive message to the world.

The chorus repeats the phrase "so jump in the river and learn to swim, God's gonna wash away all your sins." This is a reference to baptism, an important ritual in Christianity that symbolizes cleansing of the soul. The final verse encourages the listener to look to the sky and find hope in the ultimate judgment day. "Hey satellite man your time has come, your words received by everyone. And should you fall, well that's OK, you love the ones that you betray." Here, the singer acknowledges that even those who have failed in the past can still do good in the world.

Many will disagree, but as a child of the eighties, I can honestly say that no other musical era comes even close! I am now 46 years old and I am still stuck musically in that wonderful decade, unable to move on!

@serdar7396

This is the best comment I've ever read about 80's music, absolutely I think the same

“Satellite” by the Hooters resonated with the listeners who were up to their eyeballs as I was with the Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals in 1987. It also resonates with those of us who have followed the excesses of Paul and Jan Crouch, Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Joel Osteen, Paula White, and the rest of the hot air artists trying to sell salvation through them, instead of preaching salvation through Jesus Christ. When these hucksters of holiness have their meeting with God in the hereafter and exclaim “Lord, didn’t we preach in Your name?”, He will say “Depart from Me, I never knew you”. Private jets? Mansions? Luxury cars? Air-conditioned shelters for cats and dogs? Really?

Testify! But keep it close to the vest. Hit the secular world with too much common sense and they instantly rebel!

@rynes.rai7er993

That may end up being the case.

This has got to be the funniest video I've ever seen, except for Weird Al! 🤣
