I Smell Winter
The Housemartins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now the sun was in my eyes
So forgive me if I was blind
But I can suddenly see the light
Now the blinds are raised

Now he's finally spoken
Winter's finally broken
Realize I'm heading
For colder days

He can feel it just around the corner
He can feel it on every breath
And something tells him it's good goodbye summer
And something tells him it's the kiss of death

Losing at the tracks
(I smell)
Loosens all his taps
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

There's a chill down my spine
(I smell)
But the weather's fine
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

You better button up your coat
Or it will catch you in the pit of the throat
You can certainly feel the wind blow
When you're by yourself

And when the snow has finally melted
You better think about who you shelter
'Cos one of these days
It might just be someone else

And he's searched underground and overground for a partner
Played his harmonica 'til his lips were raw
He's looked through tins and rubbish bins just for an answer
So far each year he's drawn the shortest straw

Losing at the tracks
(I smell)
Loosens all his taps
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

There's a chill down my spine
(I smell)
But the weather's fine
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

I smell winter
I smell winter
I smell winter
I smell winter

And he's searched underground and overground for a partner
Played his harmonica 'til his lips were raw
He's looked through tins and rubbish bins just for an answer
So far each year he's drawn the shortest straw

Losing at the tracks
(I smell)
Loosens all his taps
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

There's a chill down my spine
(I smell)
But the weather's fine
(Winter)
I smell winter on his breath

I smell winter

Overall Meaning

"I Smell Winter" is a melancholic song by the British band The Housemartins. The lyrics describe the end of summer and how the coming of winter changes everything. The song is about the changing of the seasons and the feelings of loneliness and isolation that can accompany the colder months. The singer reflects on how he can suddenly see the light when the blinds are raised, after being blinded by the sun. He talks about how he can feel winter just around the corner, and how something tells him that it's the kiss of death to summer.

The lyrics suggest that the coming of winter is seen as a time of loss and sadness, as it brings the end of the warm and sunny days of summer. The singer reflects on the efforts he has made to find a partner and how he has drawn the shortest straw each year. Losing at the tracks loosens all his taps, and he can smell winter on his breath. The song is about the end of a cycle and the need to prepare for the changes that are about to come.

Overall, "I Smell Winter" is a poignant and introspective song that reflects the emotions connected with the passing of time and the coming of a new season. It is a reminder that even as things change around us, we must keep searching for meaning and connections in our lives.

Anthony Muldoon

As a teenager/young adult in the late 80s/early 90s, I saw this band so many times when they came to Belfast and invariably played the Ulster Hall. Always exhilarating and they gave people in Belfast a chance, (that was often lacking), to get a lot of shit out of our systems - Catharsis!. Always impeccable musicianship and lyrics to live your life by! Just brilliant!

Andinaturally Fled

Hugely underrated band.

Giancarlo Marchini

I saw one of their last concerts in the Caird hall in Dundee. I think it was 1987 and i was only 13. I loved the housemartins before this but to see Paul Heaton Live is on another level. Been lucky enough to meet him a few times and a genuinely awesome person. One of the greatest male voices ever. Totally underrated because he did not conform to the establishment." I've come for my award" need I say more . HEATO HEATO HEATO

This should have been released as a single and with any luck be a quality Christmas number one.
