The Sound Of The Crowd
The Human League(ÈËÀàÁªÃ˺ϳªÍÅ) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put your hand in a party wave
Pass around
Make a shroud pulling combs through a backwash frame
Find the copies in a carbon mount
Pass around
Stroke a pocket with a print of a laughing sound

Get around town, get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town
No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd

The shades from a pencil peer
Pass around
A fold in an eyelid brushed with fear
The lines on a compact guide
Pass around
A hat with alignment worn inside

Get in line now, get in line now
Stay in time with the rhythm and rhyme
Get around town, get around town
Where the people look good
Where the music is loud
Get around town

No need to stand proud
Add your voice to the sound of the crowd

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Human League's "The Sound Of The Crowd" present a vision of collective joy and unity that can only be achieved through a shared experience in a kind of communal revelry. The song encourages listeners to join in and celebrate the vibrant energy and freedom of a party, where everyone can let loose and be themselves. The opening lines, "Put your hand in a party wave, pass around," set the tone for the song as an invitation to be part of something bigger than oneself. The song emphasizes the power of music and the crowd to inspire and uplift individuals, and it stresses that there is no need to stand proud or hold oneself apart from others; everyone can add their voice to the sound of the crowd and feel a sense of belonging and connection.

The lyrics use a series of evocative images and sensory details to evoke the experience of the crowd and its joys: the "pocket with a print of a laughing sound," the "shroud pulling combs through a backwash frame," the "fold in an eyelid brushed with fear." These images suggest the pleasures of touch, sound, and sight, but also carry a hint of danger or unease, as if the thrill of being part of the crowd comes with a hidden cost or risk. This sense of ambiguity adds to the song's complexity and underscores the idea that the crowd is full of contradictions and complexities.

Ok, here is my personal confession. I´m born 1970 and listened to Gasoline previous to being "introduced" to The Human League "DARE" record.
I was totally struck!
This was the time of "you are a synth person" or "you are a rock person".
I could not help it. The tones and the sounds just grabbed me.
And here I sit with my own freakin studio being somewhat influenced. I would dare to say, too little influenced, as The Human League was so greatly into finding those personal/awkward sounds that made such a mark.
All this made me buy their earlier albums Travelogue and Reproduction. Yes, I know. The records actually came in that order in Sweden.
The only songs that didn't fit me at that time... and not now even was on Travelogue; Only After Dark, Life Kills (Good text) and Touchables.
I guess those few songs reminded me too much of those times of youth rock that was popular in Sweden at that time.
Please enlighten me if I missed something in my personal subjective conclusion there. hehe (Yes, I know that personal and subjective are referring to the same.)

2023, and this still sounds amazing. Phil Oakey is a very talented man, and he has amazing stage presence. The girls dancing in time and their voices are so iconic. I love The Human League. They are one of the most incredible bands to come out of the UK.❤❤❤
