A Thing Called Love
The Imperials Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Six foot six stood on the ground, weighted 235 pounds
But I saw that giant of a man brought down to his knees by love
He was the kind of man who would gamble on love
Look you in the eye and never back up
But I saw him crying like a little whipped pup because of love

Can't see it with your eyes, hold it in your hands
Like the rules that govern our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of every man, this thing called love

It can lift you up, it can put you down
Take your world and turn it all around
Ever since time nothing's ever been found stronger than love
Men like me they worry and doubt
Trouble their minds day in and day out
Too busy a livin' to worry about a thing called love

And then I see a mother's tenderness

As she holds her young close to her breast
Then I say thank God this world will win with the thing called love.

Overall Meaning

The Imperials Quartet's song "A Thing Called Love" is a powerful and insightful exploration of the nature of love. The opening lines describe a physically imposing man, standing six foot six and weighing 235 pounds, and yet he is brought to his knees by love. The song then explores the transformative power of love, which is described as a force that cannot be seen with the eyes or held in the hands, but is nevertheless strong enough to rule the heart of every person.

The lyrics go on to describe how love can lift you up or put you down, and how it has the power to turn your world around. The song acknowledges that many people are too busy with the day-to-day struggles of life to think about love, but it ultimately concludes that love is the most powerful force in the world. The final verse describes the tenderness of a mother with her child, underscoring the idea that love is a universal force that applies to all aspects of life.

Overall, "A Thing Called Love" is a thoughtful and insightful exploration of the nature of love and its importance in our lives.

Armond Morales has one of the smoothest bass voices ever! I love this particular lineup of the great Imperials!

I remember the Imperials so well....I barely knew who the Beatles were but I wouldn't miss an Imperials concert!

@JoelDTerry

A wonderful song written by none other than the late, unspeakably great Jerry Reed.

Wow!!! I didn't know that.

This is AWESOME!!!! I grew up on the Imperials, and have been able to find almost nothing of the early versions of the group. More, please!!

Actually Roger is my cousin and he’s been a minister, as well as a lawyer and recently served as Attorney General for his state. His mother is still living, but my Uncle O’Neil passed away many years ago. I’ll be sure to mention to them that there are still folks who remember fondly!

This was a blast from the past. I think the last time I saw Roger was at Lou Hildreths house in Nashville in the early 70s. My dad, Vernon Payne and O'Neil did alot of singing back in the 50s in San Diego. Spent a lot of time at their house too. Great memories.

The Imperials lineup that sang with ELVIS! If Blackwood had not left, would anyone have ever heard of Russ Taff? The Imperials never recovered when Jim Murray left. Armond Morales, to me, is the greatest bass singer ever, period. Supposedly Wiles became a pastor and a lawyer.
