Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number one hit in the United States. With a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, he became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, made him enormously popular—and controversial.
In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He held few concerts however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world, Aloha from Hawaii. Years of prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate, just 42 years of age.
Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, blues, and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. He won three competitive Grammys, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.
Snowbird
Elvis Presley Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The unborn grass lies waiting
For its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings the song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
That will bloom again in spring
When I was young my heart was young then too
That's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life's
The thing thing that I can't win
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you
The breeze along the river seems to say
That he'll only break me heart again
Should I decide to stay
So little snowbird take me with you
When you go
To that land of gentle breezes
Where the peaceful waters flow
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you
The lyrics to Elvis Presley's song Snowbird speak about the cycle of nature and the passing of time. The song starts off with imagery of a snowy landscape, and the promise of spring that lies beneath the cold, clean blanket of snow. In this setting, the snowbird sings a song that inspires hope of renewal and the promise of new beginnings. However, the mood of the song shifts in the second verse, where the singer reveals a sense of regret and longing for something unattainable in his life. He expresses his desire to escape his current reality and fly away with the snowbird.
The song is a melancholic ballad that speaks of the human experience of loss and the desire to escape from it. The snowbird is used as a symbol of hope and renewal, representing a chance to start anew. The lyrics also evoke a sense of nostalgia, reflecting on the past and the way things used to be. The imagery of the river and gentle breezes suggest a sense of tranquillity and peace, and the desire to escape to a better place where the waters flow calmly and life is more gentle.

Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
Underneath the pure and frigid snowy blanket

The bird who stays in winter sings the familiar song
And speaks to me of flowers
And reminds me of the flowers that will bloom in spring
That will bloom again in spring
When the season changes and it's time for renewal
When I was young my heart was young then too
Back when I was young, my heart was as joyous and innocent
Anything that it would tell me
Whatever it wanted me to do, I would have done

As time went on, I started to feel hollow inside
For the thing that I want most in life's
The thing that I long for the most in my life is
The thing thing that I can't win
Something that I can never attain
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
Use your small wings to soar and leave

The one I love forever is untrue
The one I love for eternity is not faithful
And if I could you know that I would
If I could, you know that I would
Fly away with you
Join you and fly away together
The breeze along the river seems to say
The winds near the river feel like they're telling me
That he'll only break me heart again
That he will cause my heart to break again
Should I decide to stay
If I choose to remain
So little snowbird take me with you
So, my dear snowbird, take me along with you
When you go
When you depart
To that land of gentle breezes
To the place with soft winds
Where the peaceful waters flow
And where calm water passes by
