The group was founded as The Roosters by Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and Arthur Brooks, who moved to Chicago, Illinois and added Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield to their lineup to become Jerry Butler & the Impressions. By 1962, Butler and the Brookses had departed, and after switching to ABC-Paramount Records, Mayfield, Gooden, and new Impression Fred Cash collectively became a top-selling soul act. Mayfield left the group for a solo career in 1970; Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson, Reggie Torian, and Nate Evans were among the replacements who joined Gooden and Cash before the group's demise in 1983.
Inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Impressions are best known for their 1960s string of hits, many of which were heavily influenced by gospel music and served as inspirational anthems for the Civil Rights Movement.

These lyrics are from the song "A New Love" by The Impressions. The song expresses the desire to learn what love truly is and the determination to pursue it wholeheartedly.
In the first verse, the singer asks to be taught the shape or form of love because they are willing to chase after it until the end. They want to connect with someone before they become detached, seeking the solid and genuine truth of love. The lyrics also touch on the uncertainty of tomorrow, acknowledging that we often live our lives blindly, feeling our way through each day. The repeated cycle of getting hurt in love is mentioned, suggesting that having just one thing to desire would be enough for them.
The second verse refers to a photograph from a specific day and time spent with someone. The singer describes feeling a sense of loneliness in their eyes while smiling. This may imply a yearning or a longing for love, and wanting to understand what it truly looks like.
The chorus repeats the plea to be taught the shape or form of love because the singer is determined to reach it. They want to recognize the signs before it breaks and find the answer as proof of their existence or meaningful life, symbolizing the essence of living.
The bridge adds intensity to the song, expressing the desire to feel something so strongly that it's almost overwhelming. They want their heart to be bursting with emotions and want to be taught the shape of love because they are willing to chase it relentlessly.
Overall, the lyrics convey the longing for a deeper understanding of love and the commitment to pursue it fully, without fear of getting hurt. The singer seeks a true and genuine connection, expressing their determination to recognize love's presence before it fades away, ultimately believing that love is the answer and proof of a meaningful existence.
