The group was founded as The Roosters by Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and Arthur Brooks, who moved to Chicago, Illinois and added Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield to their lineup to become Jerry Butler & the Impressions. By 1962, Butler and the Brookses had departed, and after switching to ABC-Paramount Records, Mayfield, Gooden, and new Impression Fred Cash collectively became a top-selling soul act. Mayfield left the group for a solo career in 1970; Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson, Reggie Torian, and Nate Evans were among the replacements who joined Gooden and Cash before the group's demise in 1983.
Inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Impressions are best known for their 1960s string of hits, many of which were heavily influenced by gospel music and served as inspirational anthems for the Civil Rights Movement.

There's gonna be a meeting over yonder
Children, are you ready?
There's gonna be a meeting over yonder
All the boys and the girls' gonna be there
Young and old, weak and strong's gonna be there
So children, are you ready?
Get my coat, got to go
To the meeting over yonder
I've got to learn what I don't know
At the meeting over yonder
At the talkin', I'm sure all will agree
The best thing for you, you and me
Is go to the meeting over yonder
Go to the meeting over yonder
Keep on pushin' now
Children, are you ready?
There's gonna be a meeting over yonder
Children, are you ready?
For the meeting over yonder
All the boys and the girls' gonna be there
Young and old, weak and strong's gonna be there
So children, are you ready?
For the meeting over yonder
There's gonna be a meeting over yonder
For the meeting over yonder
For the meeting over yonder
For the meeting over yonder
For the meeting over yonder
The Impressions's "Meeting You Yonder" is a gospel-inspired song about a gathering that is about to take place. The song is full of excitement, as the singer asks "Children, are you ready?" for the meeting over yonder. The song speaks to the idea that everyone needs to come together, young and old, weak and strong, as there is something important to learn at this meeting. The lyrics are an invitation for everyone to join in and experience a powerful and enlightening moment.
The song emphasizes the importance of going to the meeting over yonder. The phrase "over yonder" is often used in gospel music to describe a place that is beyond where we are now, and suggests that there is something better waiting for us on the other side. The gathering in the song is not just a social event, but a place where people can learn, grow, and connect with each other in a meaningful way.
