Doctor My Eyes
The Jackson 5 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the slow parade of fears
Without crying now I want to understand
I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good
Without hiding
You must help me if you can
DOCTOR MY EYES (Eyes, eyes)
Tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise
To leave them open for so long (Yeah) Yeah
As I have wandered through this world
And as each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
People go just where they will
I never noticed them until
I got this feeling that it's later than it seems
DOCTOR MY EYES (Eyes, eyes)
Tell me what you see
I hear their cries (Cries, cries)
Just say if it's too late for me (Oh yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
DOCTOR MY EYES (Eyes, eyes)
Cannot see the sky
Is this the prize
For having learned how not to cry, yeah
The lyrics to "Doctor My Eyes" by The Jackson 5 talks about the experiences of a person, who has seen the world and all the good and bad things that come with it. The lyrics describe the journey of life as a slow parade of fears that the person has been through without shedding any tears. This person now wants to understand everything that they have been through, and has done their best to see and acknowledge both the good and the evil.
The person then asks for help from the doctor because they are at a point where they cannot see things clearly anymore. The person questions whether they were unwise to leave their eyes open for so long - implying that they may have seen too much without processing everything.
As the person has wandered through life, they have been waiting to awaken from their dreams but also never noticed the people around them until they got the feeling that it's later than it seems. They now ask the doctor to tell them what they see and if it's too late for them. They have learned how not to cry and have become desensitized to things around them, but ask if this is the prize they received for it.
Overall, the lyrics of "Doctor My Eyes" speak about the idea of experiencing life and questioning if we have seen too much, and if it's too late to fix that. It talks about the importance of acknowledging both the good and bad in life, and to reach out for help when needed.

Yeah. Jermaine came in too early and repeated the first line but they allowed it to remain in the mix.
