Rain
The Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
Rain please tell me now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another when my heart's somewhere far away
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
Rain won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we knew start to grow
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
Oh listen to the falling rain
Pitter-patter pitter-patter
Oh listen listen to the falling rain

Pitter-patter pitter-patter
Oh listen to the falling rain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Jam's song "Rain" tell the story of heartbreak and longing for a lost love. The repetitive phrase "Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain" sets a melancholic tone and emphasizes the singer's introspection.

The first verse reflects the singer's realization of his own foolishness, as the rain seems to be mocking him. He wishes that the rain would go away and let him wallow in his sorrow alone. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and the pain of being abandoned.

The second verse reveals that the person the singer cares about has left in search of a fresh start. However, the singer doesn't believe she fully comprehends the impact of her departure. He feels that she has taken his heart with her, leaving him unable to love anyone else. This stanza presents the theme of unrequited love and the lingering emotions that remain even after a relationship ends.

In the bridge, the singer pleads with the rain to relay his feelings to his lost love. He wants the rain to ask the sun to reignite the love they once shared. This demonstrates the singer's yearning for reconciliation and his hope that their love can be reignited.

The song concludes with a repetition of the opening lines, emphasizing the singer's continued longing and the persistence of his heartbreak. The pitter-patter of the rain serves as a backdrop to his sorrowful reflection, highlighting the cyclical nature of his emotions and the ongoing pain he feels.

Overall, "Rain" is a poignant exploration of lost love and the lingering effects it can have on a person's heart and soul. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of heartbreak and resignation, expressed through the metaphor of rain and its impact on the singer's emotions.

I'm no fanatical jam collector, but I owned every commercially released single and album (I thought) that was released in the late 70s and early 80s here in Australia-local releases and some uk imports . Anyone know when/where this was recorded. pretty awsome version and great to hear some new(to me anyways) jam material. cheers for this and will check out your channel for any other gems.

@aimtrue45 The whole album Was influenced heavily by revolver. And the song didn't just plagiarise taxman, it's a nod to it. I believe it was intended as a tribute.
