You
The Jets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know that I'm local
I don't wanna hide it
You like that about me
And I don't wanna fight it

You say it's amazing
But that doesn't phase you
This ego is blazing
While yours is a shadow

How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you?

The reason you call me
To spend all my money
You tell me you're leaving
And I gotta believe it

So how can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?

'Cause I need you to love me
And I need you to touch me
Well, I need you to love me
Oh, I need you
Said I still need you to love me
And I need you to touch me
Well, I need you to love me
Oh, I need you

Just say that you love me
Don't say that you're leaving
Just say that you need me
Don't say that I'm wrong
(You)
(You)

Oh how can you say that I'm wrong
How can you?
How can you say that I'm wrong
How can you? (You)
Just say that you love me (You)
Don't say that you're leaving

Just say that you love me
Don't say that I'm wrong

Overall Meaning

In The Jets's song You, the singer is in a relationship with someone who seems to appreciate their local roots and personality. However, the singer's ego clashes with their partner's more reserved and quiet demeanor. The chorus repeats the question of how the partner can say that the singer is wrong, and the bridge hints at some conflict between them, possibly over money or trust. Despite this, the singer declares that they need their partner's love and touch, and begs them to stay and not leave.

The lyrics of You seem to depict a relationship in a state of strain and tension. The singer appears to be a bit self-absorbed and arrogant, with an ego that is "blazing," in contrast with their partner's more reserved nature. It is unclear what specific disagreement they have regarding money and trust, but it seems to cause friction in their relationship. Despite this, the singer is desperate for their partner to stay and wants their love and touch. Perhaps the song is about trying to bridge cultural and personality differences in a relationship and needing to compromise and communicate more effectively.

If you only know the tumultuous tortures I had to go through to find this song...

Going through Google and reddit searches finding a song about "a waitress in a diner singing" etc, couldn't find anything and literally gave up looking for over three years.

Then on the eve of 2023, I'm by myself cleaning my room listening to an internet radio station, boom this song plays and its the greatest moment of 2022 to end it off.

Thank you for coming back into my life "The Jetts"!!

I'll never forget this amazing song ever again.

I, I was the game he would play
He brought the clouds to my day
Then like a ray of light
You came my way one night
Just one look and I knew
You would make everything clear
Make all the clouds disappear
Put all your fears to rest
Who do I love the best
Don't you know, don't you know?

You've got it all over him
You got me over him
Honey, it's true
There's just you
You must have been heaven-sent
Hearing me call, you went out on a limb

And you're all that he's not
Just look what I've got
'Cause you've got it all
Over him

No, don't let him worry you so
Once I met you, I let go
Oh you can surely see
You're so much more to me

Just one look and I knew
You would make everything clear
Make all the clouds disappear
You're better than all the rest
Who do I love the best
Don't you know, don't you know?

You've got it all over him
You got me over him
Honey, it's true
There's just you
You must have been heaven-sent
Hearing me call, you went out on a limb

And you're all that he's not
Just look what I've got
'Cause you've got it all
All over him

Honey, it's true
There's just you
You must have been heaven-sent
Hearing me call, you went out on a limb

And you're all that he's not
Just look what I've got
'Cause you've got it all
All over him

Honey, it's true
There's just you
You must have been heaven-sent
Hearing me call, you went out on a limb

And you're all that he's not
Just look what I've got
'Cause you've got it all
Over him

I was in junior high and high school during the 80s. It was a great decade to be a teenager. Most Americans actually loved the USA! Computers took off. The music was motivating and one could actually understand the words. Sport heroes wanted to win (not promote themselves). Public schools knew right from wrong and were allowed to stand on principles. I feel so sorry for today's teenagers.
