We are a thing that came out of a few chance meetings at Sydney University. You see, Heather and Hayley had been playing music together for a while. Inevitably came the journey south from Byron - being their place of youth - to Sydney for a foray into higher education. Nik and Sam were studying at Sydney University also. And you know, for some reason you just meet people...
We don't have a manifesto as such, but we do have definite intentions in what we do. We wish to play pop, but with a recognizable element of self-awareness. We wish to be emotional, but with a sense of certainty that our audiences won't walk away thinking that we take ourselves too seriously. What is paramount is an attempt to push this thing called the culture industry in some direction which makes it more human. (I guess this is all too ambitious but oh well... We do try)
Heather studies piano at the conservatorium and reads a bit too much Russian literature. Hayley looks toward her personal canon of pop ballads for guidance in all situations and believes we must return to the way life was prior to the poker machine epidemic. Nik is a science student who imbues his drumming with formulas and mathematical complexities. Sam is a country music-playing, Marx-spouting communist with a love of all things meaningfully subversive.
The Jezabels have released 3 EPs: Dark Storm (2010), The Man is Dead (2009) and She's So Hard (2009).

Angels Of Fire
The Jezabels Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm young on the outside
But this evil within
Has got me addicted
At night in my bed
When I look around me
It feels like everyone's dead
And darkness is surrounding
I need an angel of fire
To light up the way
I'm getting old and bitter
Roll it again
And I swear, I'll live it every second
Hit me with the rhythm of Beyoncé
Oh if I had it again, I'd wanna know
What every part of your body is for
A comeback, honey
I'm talking about a comeback
Yeah if I had it again, I'd wanna know
Where every path of the river flows
So comeback, honey
Oh, I really need you
Angels of fire
Light up the way
I'm getting old and bitter
Roll it again
Angels of fire
Flocking above
I'm getting old and bitter
Show me some love
Angels of fire
Angels of fire
Come back, honey
Oh, I really need you
Come back, honey
Come back
The Jezabels's "Angels of Fire" is a song about a person who is struggling with inner demons and feeling lost and alone in the world. The person is young on the outside but feels like they are old and bitter on the inside. They are addicted to something dark and dangerous, and when they look around them at night, they feel like everyone is dead and darkness is surrounding them. The person is searching for an angel of fire to light up their way and help them find their way out of the darkness. They need someone to come back to them and show them some love.
The lyrics suggest that the person is looking for something or someone to help them escape their own personal hell. They feel like they are on the brink of losing themselves completely, and they need someone to pull them back from the edge. The reference to Beyoncé and the rhythm in the lyrics suggest that the person is looking for something to make them feel alive again. They want to live every second of their life to the fullest and experience everything that life has to offer. The lyrics are a plea for someone to come back to them and help them find the light.
Overall, "Angels of Fire" is a powerful and introspective song about the struggle of dealing with inner demons and finding hope in the darkness.

Amazing album, amazing band. The sweeping strings that are prominent in the intro and other areas of this song actually give me shivers. So good!

Heather, Nik, Hayley, and Sam, guys, this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful tracks you've ever made. I've always thought that Hurt Me would be the centrepiece of your discography for me, but this is now equally as dear to me. I hope you get to work more with Dan Grech on your next album!
