Psychotherapy
The Jezabels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hail a cab, if you want a yarn
Psychotherapy, owing at the turn
Looking good now, caught in angry youth
Love you babe, you're hotter than Peru
Oui je t'aime I know what you're itching for
Like embers of the last of a dying world
Gone forevermore
Leave tonight
I'll be there for you
There's not a star in the sky has gone unnamed
Which one are we going to?
A bleed on the west side of my mind
And it holds a mirror to yours
So tell me what's a boy like you
Doing in a place like Mars?

Look around you
We don't have to wait
We got it all
Leave a light on
Even if you won't
Say you will

What's a young boy like yourself
Doing in a place like this
On your own?
On your own, all alone

Look around you
We don't have to wait
We got it all
Leave a light on

Even if you won't
Say you will

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Psychotherapy" by The Jezabels relate to a casual conversation or small talk of sorts. "Hail a cab, if you want a yarn" indicates the possibility of a chance encounter, that can lead to a conversation. "Psychotherapy, owing at the turn" could be interpreted as the subject of the conversation that is about to occur. 'Owing' refers to a payment due, so it is possible that the conversation is about paying for psychotherapy. The next line "Looking good now, caught in angry youth," is a contradictory statement, where looking good can refer to the physical appearance, but caught in angry youth, refers to the emotional turmoil that comes with being young. The line "Love you babe, you're hotter than Peru" seems out of place in the context, but could be the singer's way of expressing admiration for the person, to start off the conversation on a light or affectionate note.

In the following lines, the singer seems to be speaking in French with "Oui, je t'aime," meaning "Yes, I love you." The next line "I know what you're itching for," hints at either a familiarity between the two speakers or that the conversation is continuing to explore personal issues. "Like embers of the last of a dying world/Gone forevermore" hints at the feeling of finality or regret over something that has ended.

The next stanza, "Leave tonight/I'll be there for you/There's not a star in the sky has gone unnamed/Which one are we going to?" indicates a sense of companionship or camaraderie, with the singer assuring the person that they will be there for them. The notion of discussing and naming the stars appears in several songs as it is a recurring theme of human connection through the grandness of the universe. The line "A bleed on the west side of my mind/And it holds a mirror to yours/So tell me what's a boy like you/Doing in a place like Mars?" is open to interpretation. One could say that it portrays a feeling of distress through the line 'bleed on the west side of my mind.' Yet, the following line conceals more complexity as it mirrors the other person's thoughts and emotions back to them. Finally, the question about what a boy like the person is doing in a place like Mars could imply a state of confusion, isolation or the unlikelihood of their circumstances.
