The first time I saw this scene I thought: "he does love her, he jumped after her after all, he just won't admit it", thanks to life and it's harsh lessons I've come to understand that he jumps, not because of love but because of ego, he has a hard time letting go of someone who adores him so much, so devoted and admiring of him, he is not jumping to save her, he is jumping to save what she represents...love to himself.

COUGH well you're going to hate it lmao, Birds of Prey is the worst. Margret (Harley quinn) directed it saying (spolier alert) that they were in this "toxic" relationship and that Harley should be her own and get out of it. But there wasn't even a reason to make the movie in the first place. Since the Joker in Suicide Squad actually cared about Harley, instead in all the other movies and comics, he just abused her. (I have nothing against age gap couples in real life, but in movies it just seems....weird, idk how to explain it) Jared's Joker didn't remind me of the ORIGINAL Joker but maybe his son? He was trying to kill her. Then just to have some fun with her, he forced her to say an oath, then ask permission.... it was a joke to him at first. A way to rid himself of a loose end. Then, knowing what she was going though, and also feeling something he's not supposed to feel, you see the "fuck it" look that Leto pulls off perfectly (I mean, he's literally the best actor in the movie but they didn't even give him a chance at being a real part of it) then turns and without hesitation, dives into the only thing that might put fear in him (besides The Bat.)

Best scene in the movie. Best scene in and of DC's latest stuff, really.

Him doing that just shows how much he loved her but didn't want to admit it. And he didn't realize it until she was already in the vat.

I love both Margot Robbie's and Jared Leto's performance of these 2 characters. In the comics, Joker throws her in the chemicals. In the movie, he simply asks her if she would be willing to do this, then steps back and let's her do it. Joker even warns her to "not make this oath thoughtlessly."
I've seen what women will do for someone they love, or at least someone they think they love. But for Harleen Quinzel, there is no going back, she will be Harley Quinn till the day she dies, if that's even possible. Dear God, I don't want to picture that. But I think these characters are at least 60 or more years old.
I like Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, but I think Jared Leto's portrayal just went further in terms of what the Joker's mental state could be at any given time. Every time I see the scene where a man calls Harley "a bad b*tch", and then Joker tilts his head to the side, I cringe. I know that that person just wrote his own death sentence.
I find it interesting that I almost know what the Joker is gonna do almost before he does. It's a bit scary to me in fact.

I feel like the Joker is a full range of traits that you just can't fit into only a single character on screen, this is why I appreciate all Joker interpretations, no matter how well they are liked by the public. I think this representation of Joker is to show his psychopathy and disregard for Harley in this toxic relationship. The one Heath Ledger played was to show his brokenness and his obsession with Batman, and Joaquin's Joker shows his pain and how he was robbed of his good traits by the life he was unfortunate enough to live. In my opinion Joker is not a villain, but a broken, mislead, and incredibly nuanced antagonist who's existence was disregarded by everyone and never learned how to healthily cope with his traumas and experiences.

I know everyone is talking about how it’s a toxic relationship. Towards the end .. he realized his guilt and that he couldn’t let her die after all she did for him. He loved her. Even if it was “toxic” he was crazy.. she was a maniac. That’s what those kind of lovers do. They both killed these roles.

Even though most people dislike THIS joker, I find that the toxic relationship between Harley and the Joker is the best portrayed in this movie. Heath's joker could not include a Harley due to his portrayal of the Joker in my opinion (even though his joker was great). What I regret though is the total lack of violence "shown" to the public. If the director had included even a 1/4 of what The joker had done in the suicide squad (animation movie) and the character design for the Joker had been less flashy (aka the "Damaged" tattoo for instance). Most of you would have found his performance not so bad.
Anyway, I'm sure some people will still say "NAH IS IS THE WORSTTTTTTT" with the only argument being "he is unnatural or forced". This may be true for THIS script because the script was bad and made to make "Deadshot" shine (this is also why all the other characters except Harley Quinn are less charismatic). If you don't believe me watch again the movie and sip your favorite bottle of wine every time Deadshot is on the screen (spoiler alert: you'll end up drunk).


To conclude, we see too little of this Joker character development in the script, and his apparition seems too forced because the script was poorly written (compared to the animated movie).

Finally I hear someone put all my thoughts onto the movie in one comment. It's not Leto's fault that his Joker was mishandled like it was (although I do believe that he certainly could have toned it down with the weird shit he did to the cast among other things). There was a genuine potential between the two here and WB/DC ruined it all by focusing on the other characters and cutting most of the joker out of the movie.

This movie got so much hate from fans that could never be pleased. That's the problem with producing a movie with iconic characters. Everyone has their own idea of how it should play out. HOWEVER, this seen was beautifully shot and acted. No denying it.
