+Antonin Mathieu I don't think that base was ever secret. I'm fairly certain I heard about it well before this and other so-called "secret space mission" documentaries aired and I was a BIG follower of the US space program pre-Challenger.

The USAF always intended to use the Shuttle for secret missions. They never made a big secret of that! I'm fairly certain it was known that they tested the facility at Vandenberg AFB with the Shuttle Enterprise to see that the facilities would work. The reason why the Shuttle pad at Vandenberg was decommissioned (NEVER used by a flight vehicle once!) was because it was an unsafe facility. This was after the Challenger accident when a comprehensive review of the Shuttle flight hardware, launch, and landing facilities was conducted.

Vandenberg absolutely flunked as a manned launch facility.

There was no way to disperse the toxic, highly volatile gases from the pad when the Shuttle blasted off! In the biggest blunder in base construction history, they didn't take that part into account and they could have had a disaster to parallel the Russian Moon Rocket accident in 1968/1969! Also, Vandenberg didn't have half the facilities Cape Kennedy did with the Vehicle Assembly Building and so forth. By comparison to Cape Kennedy, it was a very basic launch facility with most things done out in the open air which is considered a no-no with a delicate, fussy launch system.

Vandenberg was really only intended for specific Shuttle missions -- polar flights that went longitudinally, north to south. Cape Kennedy was really a lot more convenient and better set up for manned space flights. The only advantage Vandenberg had was its geographical line-up for polar flights. Cape Kennedy could handle everything else. They did, in fact, conduct a few classified missions from Cape Kennedy and it was a never big secret when they did that. They just didn't tell people what kind of payloads and specific missions the Shuttle was conducting on those flights.

This business of Vandenberg being a "secret base" is B.S. It's in full view of Los Angeles not to mention the rest of Southern California! How are you going to hide a Shuttle launch from that place from ANYBODY?!?!?!?

I've seen at least 3-5 Shuttle launches in Florida myself. I used to live in Orlando, roughly an hour away from Cape Canaveral. You cannot hide these launches from the public. They're TOO loud to begin with (unless you're a really deep sleeper) and the flames light up the night sky. The Shuttle landings were even worse because of the double sonic boom that hit every building in its path. I was woken up at least twice during the night by sonic booms and I thought the first time that my house had been hit by a car!

Once you've witnessed a 'space shot' for yourself, you have to laugh about the conspiracy theories and all the other B.S. that gets posted on the Internet... The paper trails for these programs literally run from the Earth to the Moon and back. That and every time a rocket gets shot off you can count on hundreds of thousands of people being aware of the fact! There's no way you can hide a rocket launch unless it's done a planet other than Earth -- many, many light years away.

Close to 100% probability :
1. What we call a History is the result of chemical and electric reactions inside individual brains.
2. History is a collection of lies that's been mutually agreed upon.
3. Real images are much closer to being the truth. Just like a video surveillance recording.

And about that formula: lies repeated over a thousand times becomes the ''truth''...
It's been in use since prehistoric times. But it was derived by Nazi minister of propaganda, Joseph Gebels. And ever since it's been put to a successful use by those who's trying to achieve any goals using masses.

This project seems like it was a lot of fun to be a part of. Funding wasn't a constant worry, support was serious and understanding of failures, lots of cooperation and everyone seemed to look back on it fondly.

This is one of the best documentaries ever made! Remarkable research! Thank you.
One mistake: Murphys law did not originate from Edwards AFB in the 1940's. Justice of the peace Murphy was a Laramie Wyoming judge who (happened) to hold deed to the land at the highest point of the UPRR, east of Laramie (where UP carelessly built a pyramid to mark the site). UPRR came to town with a suitcase of money- didn't tell Murphy that and threatened him instead, offering a $300 city lot to him. Then the whole screw up came to light. By the time the phrase was used at Edwards, it had been a common phrase since the 1880's.

To add a small detail, i would like to say that aerial reconnaissance is used since the French Revolutionnary Wars, with the "Compagnie des aérostiers" (Corps of airships'men). This unit is sometimes considered as the first "Air Force", although such a designation is used only since the interbellum period, beetween both World Wars. So the Corona or others spy satellites are only the latest form of this.

+Antonin Mathieu I've heard that even the secret side of Shuttle was intended to launch from VAFB.

Thank you for these facts.

What a fabulous legacy, they were the heroes of peace during the Cold War. They have my greatest respect and admiration for a job well done.

The Russian launchpad at 45:03 was the N1 Rocket that was planned to get the Russians to the moon, but like the US the USSR also had many rocket fails on the launch pad. Go look up the 'engine that came in from the cold' docco for more info about the N1 rocket project!

What an excellent documentary! Thanks for making this available.
