The main vocalists of the group were Debbie Allen, Valerie Landsburg, Erica Gimpel, Carlo Imperato, Gene Anthony Ray, Lee Curreri, Lori Singer and P.R. Paul. Another vocalist, Irene Cara, did not appear in the TV series but sang the "Fame" theme song and played Coco in the original motion picture. The song catapulted Irene Cara to stardom. It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe Award, and was a UK number one.
The US television series was originally produced between 1982 and 1987 and was based on the 1980 motion picture of the same name. Using a mixture of drama and music, it followed the lives of the students and faculty at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Although fictional, it was based heavily on the actual Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York. Most interior scenes were filmed in Hollywood, California. In Seasons 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 the show filmed several exterior scenes on location in New York City.
In 2012 a campaign was launched to get the complete Kids From Fame back catalogue released on CD https://www.facebook.com/GetTheKidsFromFameOnCd and in 2013 Cherry Pop Records http://www.cherryred.co.uk/cherrypop.asp sought to license 'Fame' albums, despite previously unsuccessful attempts.

But HOW DID THAT ALL TURN OUT FOR THEM?
Telling them that
THEYLL ALL BE STARS...
Face reality.....
THEYRE NOT ALL STARS TODAY
AND WHILE INSPIRING KIDS IS A GOOD THING
THEY ALSO MUST KNOW THAT THEY WILL STUMBLE THROUGH LIFE
WE ALL DO.....
@nicholavaughan
Still gives me goosebumps.
This song has been a touchstone for when things went "wonky" in my life (especially when my singing career curtailed and life threw some significant curveballs my way).
In the early 1980s "Fame" helped me through bullying, dark days and some pretty challenging times... but also made other people realise just how hard I was working (from the age of 7) to do the thing I loved most in the world.
Now, almost five decades on... life didn't pan out quite the way I had planned... medical matters in my late teens meant that I couldn't continue with music.. and throughout my adult life there have been "rocks in the road" that I have had to navigate ... but, still (perhaps more than ever), this song resonates.
Writing is my "life focus" nowadays... still with some performing and now with a deep joy of setting down words. ... which is why I think the lyrics "speak to me" even more with the passing of time..
"And I'll burn with the fire of ten million stars"...
These are words I wish I had set down... because they are poetry.. and truth.

The ending hits hard, especially now in the wake of the fact that we have lost Irene Cara and Gene Anthony Ray, alongside a good chunk of the cast who played the staff.
It is really haunting to see their younger selves alongside a group of other young people singing about their hopes & dreams for the future, and now the young people featured here are now in their 50’s and 60’s, old enough to be parents & grandparents of high school age kids now, and many of them are now around the same age as much of the school’s staff.
It’s a reminder that time moves by quickly, and that we should make every minute of it count. Don’t weep and feel sad, be happy about your future.
It’s really impactful seeing it on YouTube; I cannot imagine the impact it must have on the people who saw this movie in theaters in 1980. I wish I could have seen the movie when it first came out, but alas, I was born in 1999.
I remember singing this song at a middle school choir concert (with just a piano accompaniment) when I was around I would say 11 or 12 years old, and I had NO idea it was from a movie up until a few years ago. This gives me nostalgia for my middle school years, and I wonder what my peers are up to now.
@66marypat
I’m 55. I have Multiple Sclerosis. I was a singer/dancer in my youth & saw Fame numerous times as a teen. This song is beyond powerful & every time I share this incredible song, it affects someone in a positive way. It’s incredible and no matter where we are in life, WE ARE THE STARS!
@recontraufa
Love for you, all Love.

So true. We may be old or creaky or sad but we still dance in our hearts 💕
@logiclemonadesassybawstinm3146
I'm 52... Just watched it again and bawled eyes out thinking of my youth... We had such great freedoms that kids will never know ❤️ I pray you well 🙏🕯️😁
@Blumelisaful
Sorry to here that you have Ms. Have you checked out Terry walhls and Steve solves Ms?
@mgparis
Best wishes to you, Mary!
@class3times
I attended a school of performing arts because of this movie. I moved to NYC because of this movie. I had an 18 year career as a professional dancer because of this movie. Thank you Sir Alan Parker for creating a film that inspired an entire generation to "celebrate the me yet to come". We are the Fame Generation!
@HelenaBKay
Wow, same here, art school bc of that movie. No collective actions in the visual arts, though, which disappointed be. Expected all my life be like in Fame from then on and was disappointed (successful, yes, yet disappointed about all the narcissism and lack of solidarity and collective fun)
@HelenaBKay
"Fame Generation" - absolutely true. Highly critisized later in "Fight Club" 😉
@jaycinthmassey2354
You were brave...I had the same dream but too afraid to try.
