Chilly Winds
The Kingston Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm goin' where them chilly winds don't blow
Gonna find a true love
That is where I want to go
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Sing your song,
Sing it soft and low
Sing it for your baby
And then I'll have to go
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Wish I was a headlight
On a westbound train
I'd shine my light on
Cool Colorado range
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

If you're feelin' lonely,
If you're feelin' low
Remember that I loved you
More than you will ever know
Goin' where them chilly winds don't blow

I'm leavin' in the springtime,
Won't be back till fall
If I can forget you,
I might not come back at all
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Out where them chilly winds don't blow
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Overall Meaning

The Kingston Trio's song "Chilly Winds" is about the singer's desire to escape the cold weather and find a new love. The lyrics convey a sense of restlessness and longing for change. The singer wishes to leave in search of a more fulfilling life with a true love, where the chilly winds don't blow. This sense of yearning is further expressed when the singer asks to have a song sung "soft and low" for their loved one before they leave.

The song's theme of leaving one's current situation to find something better is emphasized in the lines "Wish I was a headlight on a westbound train, I'd shine my light on cool Colorado range." The singer aspires to leave their old life behind and travel to new places, away from the cold winds that haunt them.

The song concludes with the singer announcing their plan to leave in the springtime and potentially not return at all if they can forget their past love. The message is bittersweet, as the singer is attempting to find love and happiness in a new place, but is also leaving behind a part of their life.

This is my favorite song of all time. I want to weep when I realize that Dave, John, Bob, and Nick are all gone now. Whether it was the Guard trio or the Stewart trio, they were magic.

A truly great group! I have all their vinyl records.

@GrandpaLucasMusic

You don’t understand how much I appreciate this video. Despite all of their success, the Kingston Trio have almost become obsolete. There are barely ANY videos of them performing live - especially not as clear as this one. I’ve been looking for almost 5 years! Thank you so much for sharing.

I never realized that the college concert was recorded in video. If I’m not mistaken, “500 Miles Away From Home” was also recorded in this set. Do you happen to know if there’s video of that? It’s my absolute favorite song of all time.

Warm regards,

-A young man who has dreamt of keeping the Trio’s legacy alive.

I think you are mistaken.. I have seen countless videos of the Trio online.

@gymnastix

Are you saying the clip seen and heard here is from a college concert? Because this appears to be from a filmed television series, not from a live concert or musical-comedy or variety TV series such as 'Hootenanny' (on which The Kingston Trio and other major folk performers refused to appear, due to "blacklisting" of Pete Seeger), 'The Ed Sullivan Show' or 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour', all of which were originally shot on videotape, not on film.'

Initially, this clip appeared to me to be from 'The Jack Benny Program', on which the Trio did appear, because the staging with the curtain has the appearance of the Benny TV show. But the Trio only performed "I'm Going Home" and 'Tijuana Jail' in that Benny episode.

I wish the person who runs this YouTube channel would stare in her/his video description here thr source of the film.

Beyond Beautiful! I have to give huge kudos to their director for highlighting their story telling and making sure they remained true to folk art.
