Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

I Took My Baby Home
The Kinks Lyrics

She said don't you leave me alone
She kissed me on the cheek and I moaned
I said I won't
Well, she said, baby I know what's best
She said I could do with a rest
Then she put her hand on my chest
She had some pile-drivin' kisses
They really knocked me out
They knocked me oh-oh-over
She had a hug like a vice
She squeezes once or twice and I moan
So when I took my baby home
She said don't you leave me alone
She kissed me on the cheek and I moaned
I said I won't
Won't
Won't
I said I won't
She had some pile-drivin' kisses
They really knocked me out
They knocked me oh-oh-over
She had a hug like a vice
She squeezes once or twice and I moan
So when I took my baby home
She said don't you leave me alone
She kissed me on the cheek and I moaned
I said I won't
I said I won't
Won't
Won't
"I Took My Baby Home" by The Kinks is a 1964 song that tells the story of a man who takes his date home after a night out. The lyrics are filled with sexual innuendos and tongue-in-cheek humor. The song opens with the man taking his date home and her asking him not to leave her alone. He assures her that he won't leave her, and she then tells him that he could do with a rest. She then places her hand on his chest, and the man agrees that he won't leave.
The chorus is a repetition of the man's promise not to leave. The second verse talks about the woman's aggressive kisses that knock him out and leave him moaning. She also hugs him tightly, and he moans again. The song closes with a repetition of the chorus.
The song is a quirky and playful take on teenage romance and sexual awakening, and it showcases Ray Davies' gift for writing lyrics that are humorous while also conveying deeper meaning.
