Exodus
The Levellers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fighting for and claiming what remains
And dreaming, this is not dreaming
This is the exodus from the game
Chorus
Dance beneath the stars
We the sound system
We the collective
We the solution
Should be respected
At midnight the pharises plant the poison
False evidence to bring all back in line
It's no method just dealing out bad justice
When no one here's committed any crime
Chorus
Well turn the dust to soil
Turn the rust of hate back into passion
It's not water into wine but it's here
And it's happening
Massive but passive to bring the peace back
Respect here, respect for all the people
Good copper (jah?) lawyer all good minds
Can see there is no evil
The only wrong is fighting changing times
Chorus
The lyrics of "Exodus" by The Levellers convey a strong message of empowerment and unity among the people. The song emphasizes the idea that it is the people who hold the power, and it is their struggle to claim what is rightfully theirs. The opening line, "It's simple because it is the people," suggests that the solution to their problems lies within the collective action of the people themselves.
The lyrics continue by stating, "Fighting for and claiming what remains," highlighting the determination of the people to fight for what they believe in, regardless of the obstacles they face. The line "And dreaming, this is not dreaming, this is the exodus from the game" suggests that their aspirations and hopes are not mere fantasies but a tangible journey towards liberation and freedom.
The chorus, "Dance beneath the stars / We the sound system / We the collective / With an open heart / We the solution / Should be respected," represents the unity and strength of the people as they come together to create positive change. It emphasizes the idea that through their collective efforts, they can find solutions to the problems they face.
The verse continues by depicting a darker side of society, as the lyrics describe the midnight actions of the pharises (symbolizing powerful authorities) planting poison and false evidence to maintain control and suppress the people's fight. The lyrics convey a sense of injustice, highlighting that the people are being punished despite not having committed any crime.
However, the lyrics also suggest hope and resilience. The line "Turn the dust to soil / Turn the rust of hate back into passion" represents the transformative power of unity and determination. It implies a shift from negativity and animosity towards a more positive and passionate mindset. The lyrics acknowledge that the change might not be as miraculous as water turning into wine, but it asserts that change is indeed happening and must be acknowledged and embraced.
The song further emphasizes the importance of respect and understanding among individuals and the need to recognize the inherent good in people. It suggests that by being united and fighting against the forces that seek to maintain the status quo, the people can overcome the challenges they face and create a better world. The lyrics encourage everyone, including the police, lawyers, and open-minded people, to stand together and embrace the changing times. It implies that the only wrongdoing is resisting change and that embracing it will lead to a more harmonious society.
Overall, "Exodus" by The Levellers serves as a rallying cry for unity and empowerment among the people. It calls for collective action, resilience, and respect, highlighting the transformative power of coming together to create positive change in the face of adversity.

I've grown up listening to this too, but I actually found it myself when I was six XD. I was a weird six year old, but that was 10 years ago now.

@A Person awesome, have you ever seen them live?

Call Of Duty TTG yeah I have. It was really good :)
I saw them at the O2 either early this year or late last year, can't remember which. What about you?
@SherbetNips
@A Person first heard them at their festival Beautiful Days when I was about four, every year until 2013 and then I recently heard them in Hereford Cathedral in July playing their acoustic album :)
@aperson2378
Call Of Duty TTG cool! We don't really have that much money, so my dad saved up and the two of us went to see them as a kind of one of treat. I don't really see concerts.
