Sleep on the Floor
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pack yourself a toothbrush, dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
'Cause if we don't leave this town
We might never make it out
I was not born to drown
Baby, come on

Forget what Father Brennan said
We were not born in sin
Leave a note on your bed
Let your mother know you're safe
And by the time she wakes
We'll have driven through the state
We'll have driven through the night
Baby, come on

If the sun don't shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave
Or will you rail against the dying day?

And when we looked outside
Couldn't even see the sky
How do you pay the rent?
Is it your parents?
Or is hard work, dear
Holding the atmosphere?
I don't wanna live like that, yeah

If the sun don't shine on me today
If the subways flood and the bridges break

Jesus Christ can't save me tonight
Put on your dress, yes, wear something nice
Decide on me, yeah, decide on us
Oh, oh, oh, Illinois, Illinois

Pack yourself a toothbrush, dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
'Cause if we don't leave this town
We might never make it out

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers's song Sleep on the Floor is about the decision to leave your current life and start fresh, taking a chance on something better. The lyrics suggest the singer is urging their partner to take a leap of faith with them, to leave the town they're in before it's too late. The chorus implies that the singer is worried that if they don't leave now, they'll be stuck there forever, unable to escape the cycle of poverty and hardship. The line "I was not born to drown" shows the singer's unwillingness to be held down by their current circumstances.

The second verse reflects on the power of belief and the faith people have in their religious institutions. The singer states they don't believe they were born in sin and invokes the name of Jesus Christ. This juxtaposition between belief and the desire to escape one's present life creates a sense of ambiguity in the song's meaning. It's unclear if the singer is seeking salvation through leaving or if they are rejecting the idea of being saved altogether.

The song's third verse returns to the tangible problems of their current situation, suggesting that they're struggling to make ends meet and that the future is uncertain. The chorus is repeated again, with the singer emphasizing that time is running out and that if they don't leave soon, they'll be stuck in this life forever. The final verse returns to the idea of leaving, framing it as a decision that must be made together. The final line, "If we don't leave this town, we might never make it out," sums up the central theme of the song: the desperation to break free from the restraints of their current life.

@@A2Z2REAL BIBLE calls us all to be real, sober minded souls, who live holy lives on earth.
BIBLE calls nor expect nobody to be:
- religious of any kind
- monk
- nun
BIBLE expect us to turn our LACK OF KNOWLEDGE into KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH (HOSEA 4:6)
Each human life on earth:
- repent
- BORN AGAIN and GO AND SIN NO MORE
- be baptised in HOLY SPIRIT /THE COMFORTER
- LIVE HOLY
= soul, after earthly death in HEAVEN. Easy logic, asks no degree in anything.

Bible calls us to give out RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT, no to keep our mouth shut and support everything with blind eyes and deaf ears.

See no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil ā€“ that old saying, it belongs to masons, am I right again? The vow of silence of theirs.

SOULS, dare to read and study BIBLE (KJV) and search about FREEMASONRY.

@iken.4751

Ha.... Iā€™m living that. My fiancĆ© chose to walk out and go back to her emotionally abusive parents. We weā€™re gonna run and live and dream. She had always wanted a tattoo, sheā€™d never been on a road trip, she wanted to work with foster kids. Her parents are wealthy. I am not. They hated me for that. They hated me for encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone and chase dreams and adventure. We had planned that when we got married we wanted to put some distance between her family and she and I.

To convince her to leave me. They told all her friends that I had raped her, but she was too ashamed to admit or talk about it. So her friends and family weā€™re all trying to get her to leave. I lost the respect and friendship of most of my peers over all of this. I had extended family dealing with the fallout of their character assassination.

One week before the wedding, we found out she was pregnant. We weā€™re scared, but so excited. We had always wanted to have children. Her family detonated, they suggested she raise the child without me, they called the cops on me, they told her I had mental health issues, they called me family and begged them to convince me to leave her (which didnā€™t happen because my family knows that her family is psychotic)

Finally the pressure became too much. She left without even a word. I got a text saying she was leaving the country to go visit family, I got a letter saying she miscarried (They might have convinced her to abort the baby but I donā€™t know) one month later I got an email saying itā€™s over, she loved me but I donā€™t respect her parents enough for us to work out. She said Iā€™m a good man, and that she was so inspired and excited to dream with me. But her family hates me. And her family is whatā€™s most important to her right now.

Sheā€™s gone. I donā€™t know what to do. She was my family.

@@kianobird6839 He didn't die. He gave her an ultimatum: unless she marries him and leaves the funeral of her father he will remains to be with her. She chose to stay at her father's funeral so he left her. After many years she regrets this choice and imagines what would have happened if she made a different choice back then. Listen to "Cleopatra" which tells this story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN5s9N_pTUs
"I was Cleopatra, I was young and an actress
When you knelt by my mattress, and asked for my hand
But I was sad you asked it, as I laid in a black dress
With my father in a casket, I had no plans, yeah
And I left the footprints, the mud stained on the carpet
And it hardened like my heart did when you left town
But I must admit it, that I would marry you in an instant
Damn your wife, I'd be your mistress just to have you around
But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life
And when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I'll be on time"

This is what this song is really about. And it's quite sad to yearn for somebody who just leaves you in the darkest times of your life just because you can't decide right away.

THESE SONGS WILL MAKE YOU BELIEVE IN WHAT DOES NOT EXIST THAN WHAT EXISTS, WHILE YOU WASTE YOUR TIME IMAGINING THE EXISTANCE OF WHICH WAS NEVER THERE AND THEN YOU FEEL SAD FOR SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT EXIST WHILE DONT ENJOY THE REAL TRUTH AND TRY TO LIVE YOUR IMAGINATION WHICH IS MOST OF THE TIME UNFRUITFUL.

My girlfriend and I did this once. We took all the money we had, got in the car, and just drove for as far as it would take us. It was a nice trip across town.
