(2) The Maccabees (2002-2016) were an indie rock band from London, UK. The line-up consisted of Orlando Weeks (vocals), Hugo White (guitar), Felix White (guitar, vocals), Rupert Jarvis (bass) and Sam Doyle (drums), who replaced Robert Dylan Thomas. Weeks stated once that the band came up with the name by flicking through the Bible and picking out a random word. Despite adopting a name with religious connotations, he affirmed that none of the band are religious.
Debuting in 2004 with the You Make Noise I Make Sandwiches EP (released on Haircut Records), they released their first single X-Ray on Promise Records on November 28, 2005. Receiving just little significant exposure - some evening play on XFM London radio station - the band however scored a minor indie hit with their second post-punk influenced single Latchmere released in April 2006 on Fierce Panda Records.
Then inking a deal with the Polydor imprint (and former home of The Cure) Fiction Records the bands first studio album, Colour It In, was released on May 4, 2007 .
To date (late September 2007) they have released three (widely available) singles from the album (First Love, About Your Dress and Precious Time) with a fourth and final single Toothpaste Kisses released on October 8, 2007.
On May 4, 2009 the band released Wall of Arms, their second album. Preceded by the single Love You Better on April 27th. Markus Dravs, who collaborated in the past with artists such as Björk, Arcade Fire and Coldplay, produced the album. The album has been recorded in various cities including Liverpool and Paris, unlike their first long-player which was recorded in "dribs and drabs" like frontman Orlando Weeks said.
On January 9, 2012 the Maccabees released Given To The Wild, their third album. The band worked on the album at both Rockfield Studios in Wales and their rehearsal space in London's Elephant and Castle district, before decamping to Suffolk to finish the record.
Marks to Prove It, their last album, was released in 2015.

Roses in the car
Bony saddle, bony street
Corrugated iron sheet
This bed is not concrete
This bed in which you sleep
Flesh is flesh til blood runs cold
Your carbon makes a star
Your carbon makes a star
And after all, that's all we are
After all, that's all we are
That's all we are
That's all we are
That's all we are
That's all we are
That's all we are
That's all we are
All these young men, these young lions
All these young men, these young lions
You don't know if it's true
Or if to believe in you
There are tunnels through the stone
Where weaker hearts have made a home
Their roses in a car
Their roses in a car
And after all, that's all we are
After all, that's all we are
And isn't it bizarre
The adults that we are
Still playing
Follow the leader
Body don't break
Body don't break
Body don't break
Til broken
Body gonna make
Body gonna make
Body gonna make
Another body
Don't want to be the last to leave
Body don't break
Body don't break
Body don't break
Til broken
Body gonna make
Body gonna make
Body gonna make
Another body
Don't want to be the last to leave
Don't want to be the last to leave
Don't want to be the last to leave
Don't want to be the last to leave
In "Young Lions", The Maccabees explore themes of human mortality and the fleeting nature of life. The opening lines, "Roses in the car / Bony saddle, bony street / Corrugated iron sheet" describe a world that is harsh and unforgiving, characterized by emptiness and decay. The second verse mentions tunnels through stone, where weaker hearts have found a home, suggesting that life is a struggle and that we all seek comfort in our own way.
The chorus repeats the line "after all, that's all we are", emphasizing the temporary nature of existence and our place in the universe. The lyrics suggest that humans are composed of carbon, which "makes a star", implying that even in death, we become part of something greater. The repetitive, almost chant-like structure of the chorus highlights the cyclical nature of life: we may die, but something new is always born.
The final verse addresses the idea of legacy and influence. The line "Body gonna make another body" suggests that our influence will continue to shape the world even after we're gone. The repetition of the line "don't want to be the last to leave" further emphasizes the importance of leaving a mark on the world, of making an impact that will be remembered long after we're gone.

Roses in the car
There are roses in the car
Roses in the car
There are roses in the car
Bony saddle, bony street
A path filled with rough spots and hardships
Corrugated iron sheet
A roof fashioned out of tough, wavy metal panels
This bed is not concrete
This bed is not hard and cold like a slab of concrete
This bed in which you sleep
The place where you rest your head every night
Flesh is flesh til blood runs cold
Regardless of who we are, we are all human and mortal
And blood is blood, so I am told
And it is said that all blood is the same
Your carbon makes a star
The atoms in your body could one day form a star
Your carbon makes a star
The atoms in your body could one day form a star
And after all, that's all we are
Ultimately, we are simply made up of atoms that could form stars
After all, that's all we are
In the end, that is all we are
That's all we are
In the end, that is all we are
That's all we are
In the end, that is all we are
That's all we are
In the end, that is all we are
All these young men, these young lions
All of these young men, these young, determined warriors
All these young men, these young lions
All of these young men, these young, determined warriors
You don't know if it's true
You are unsure if it is true
Or if to believe in you
Or if you should believe in yourself
There are tunnels through the stone
There are paths that lead through the hardest of obstacles
Where weaker hearts have made a home
Where the less determined have settled
Their roses in the car
Their roses are in the car
Their roses in the car
Their roses are in the car
And after all, that's all we are
In the end, we are all the same
After all, that's all we are
Ultimately, that is all we are
And isn't it bizarre
Isn't it strange
The adults that we are
How we are now grown-ups
Still playing
But we still act like children
Follow the leader
Following others mindlessly
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Til broken
Until they are damaged beyond repair
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Another body
New life will be created
Don't want to be the last to leave
We don't want to be the last to go
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Body don't break
Our bodies won't break
Til broken
Until they are damaged beyond repair
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Body gonna make
Our bodies will make
Another body
New life will be created
Don't want to be the last to leave
We don't want to be the last to go
Don't want to be the last to leave
We don't want to be the last to go
Don't want to be the last to leave
We don't want to be the last to go
Don't want to be the last to leave
We don't want to be the last to go
