Linda, Alfred, Sam, and Charity McCrary sang on the Portrait recordings, while another sibling, Howard, had sung with them on a 1972 gospel release, "Sunshine Day."
Their most popular singles were "Lost in Loving You," "Love on a Summer Night," and "You" (the latter with Stevie Wonder on harmonica), while their career highlights include opening for the Jacksons and appearing on Soul Train.
They sang a fresh, hip, urban style of gospel that was years before its time; they were doing in the early '70s what only became popular decades later.

Love
on a summer night
a gentle breeze
on a starry night
the feelin's there
music everywhere
love is in the air
won't you take me there
love
take me to a distant place
and there we will stay
till the break of day
thoughts of you
echo in my mind
in the still of night
making love so right
the midnight sun
keep shining down on you and me
it's like a dream
so make me feel that it's real
your gentle touch
is what i mean i need so much
i'm reaching now for your love
oh oh oh love hey
don't hesitate
oh i just can't wait
to make you mine
let love begin
the feeling is deep within
love set me free
i'm were i want to be
the midnight sun
keep shining down on you and me
it's like a dream
so make me feel that it's real
your gentle touch
is what i mean i need so much
i'm reaching now for your love
oh oh oh love hey
don't hesitate
oh i just can't wait
to make you mine
let love begin
the feeling is deep within
love set me free
i'm were i want to be
love on a summernight
love on a summernight
love on a summernight

Should be in anybody's Jazz Funk top ten. It's just about perfect.
@pikpik42
is it called Jazz Funk? I've been wondering for years now, because original funk is way more forward and this always seemed quite chill for me.
@virgilwyatt4632
I think that "Jazz-Funk" is a great category to place this track into. Or the also established "Acid-Funk", a sound that the groups "Incognito" and "Soul II Soul" are categorized into and maybe even the group "Kano" is or can be included into also.

Neil I remember this one from the days of Radio Horizon (London) in the early 80s. Tune for sure.

The 1980's had some real stone grooves... this classic from one of the finest from 1982

How bout, changing for you, the chilites ?
@matthewdavidpope
One of the finest jams ever written frozen and etched in a time where music was pure magic
@virgilwyatt4632
I've never heard this until a couple of weeks ago but when it dropped, I was about 20 years old. The instrumentation sounds as if something George Benson would composed and played in studio before this group laid down the vocals to it. The sound of this track reminds me so much of an era in music of hot, steamy summer nights of the past....before the wife....and definitely...before the kids.
