Something’s Gotta Give
The McGuire Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets and old immovable object like me
You can bet as sure as you live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist
Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gonna be kissed

So en garde who knows what the fates have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignoring those lips I adore
But how long can anyone try

Fight, fight, fight
Fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Overall Meaning

The McGuire Sisters' song "Something's Gotta Give" is a classic love song that captures the longing and excitement of falling in love. The song is based on the idea of two opposing forces meeting and the inevitable result that something has to give. The lyrics talk about how a force as irresistible as falling in love with someone as stubborn and immovable as the singer will only lead to one thing - an unstoppable force of passion.

The first verse describes the feeling of meeting someone who is unlike anyone else, someone who seems to possess an irresistible force that can't be ignored. The second verse builds upon this idea, with the singer falling irrepressibly in love with someone who has an implacable heart that seems impossible to break. The chorus then repeats the idea that something has to give when these two opposing forces meet, and they can't help but give in to the passion that's building between them.

The third verse talks about the struggle of trying to resist this passion, with the singer trying to ignore the lips of the person they adore. However, the lyrics recognize how futile this is, with the chorus repeating the idea of something having to give. The song ends with the two lovers facing off, ready to fight but knowing deep down that they'll eventually give in to the irresistible force between them.

Overall, "Something's Gotta Give" is an ode to the power of love and the inevitability of giving into the passion that it creates. The lyrics expertly capture the excitement, longing, and inevitable surrender of falling in love.

Wow this song is incredible. love the big band music and the incredible voices of the beautiful McGuire sister's. Just heavenly. been listening to it over and over again. Thanks to whomever gave the song to the McGuire sister's to sing. They brought their special touch to this song, also the band a perfect choice. I can't get enough of it. Can't help but think of Marilyn Monroe when I hear it. Brings a tear to my eyes, especially knowing she didn't finish the movie. but luckily I found the movie with Marilyn Monroe in it. I'm one of her biggest fans. Now I'm also a fan of the McGuire sister's. I wish one of the choreographers from the show 'So You Think You Can Dance' would use this song with the McGuire sister's in one of their dance routines. it would be so hot and sexy, especially seeing the dancers wearing the incredible clothes from the era. wish this would come true. I was surprise to find the original movie with Marilyn Monroe in it on You Tube. Can't wait to watch it. thank you You Tube for posting this song and original movie. i always wanted to see it, now my dream wish has come true. I feel sexy when I hear this song. your new fan Joe Bonilla

Such incredibly intelligent lyrics! And the sound of the blended voices of the Macguire Sisters, sounding with vintage polish and perfection! Love their rendition of the title song 'Picnic' from the movie with Novak and Holden! So beautiful!

Johnny Mercer wrote those intelligent words! And...he also wrote the MUSIC - he usually just wrote words - and PICNIC is my favorite song!

One of my favorites! Brings back memories of Las Vegas in the 60s. And the way it used to be, the shows, the strip and all those amazing people that were regulars way back when! The Maitee D’s knew your name, knew what you like to drink and your favorite table. Wonderful music everywhere and the best entertainers. Blessed that I experienced that! Love this song!
