Metropolis
The Motors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time when we imagined
Many years ago when time was young
What kind of magic did we see there?
Only Heaven knows
Not so long ago, there was a small town
Suddenly, a star began to grow
And if you look up in the sky
It's high rise

The trees began to disappear
Department stores were born
And let me tell you something, dear
There's escalators everywhere

Metropolis, Metropolis, you just had to be
Metropolis, Metropolis, a page in history
Metropolis, oh, what a curse, oh, what a buzz in the city
Metropolis, just look what you've done to me

The night is ablaze with the glory
Another page burns with the dawn
Sunset days from my hometown
Have long been gone
The beggar lies down with the rich man
Together, they dream in the past
And if you walk a rich girl down the street
It's high class

They've got her name inside a bank
A memory concern
Where people play the numbers game
With calculators everywhere

Metropolis, Metropolis, you just had to be
Metropolis, Metropolis, a page in history
Metropolis, oh, what a curse, oh, what a buzz in the city
Metropolis, just look what you've done to me

Not so long ago, there was a small town
Suddenly, a star began to grow
And if you look up high into the sky
It's high rise

The trees began to disappear
Department stores were born
And let me tell you something, dear
There's escalators everywhere

Metropolis, Metropolis, you just had to be
Metropolis, Metropolis, a page in history
Metropolis, oh, what a curse, oh, what a buzz in the city
Metropolis, just look what you've done

Metropolis, Metropolis, you just had to be
Metropolis, Metropolis, a page in history
Metropolis, Metropolis, you just had to be

Metropolis, Metropolis, just look what you've done
Look what you've done to me

Overall Meaning

The Motors' song "Metropolis" is a commentary on the rise of urbanization and the destruction of small towns. The song begins with a reflection on the past and the magic that was imagined when time was young. Then the narrative shifts to the present and the growth of a star that leads to the creation of a metropolis. As urbanization progresses, the natural world disappears and is replaced by department stores and escalators. The lyrics also touch on the prevalence of the number's game and the commodification of people's names.

The chorus of the song reflects the mixed feelings of the singer towards the metropolis. On one hand, it is acknowledged that the metropolis is an important page in history, but on the other hand, it is also a curse and has caused a buzz in the city. The final verse brings the song full circle as it returns to the image of a small town that has been transformed by the metropolis.

Overall, "Metropolis" serves as a critique of the impact of urbanization on society and the natural world. The song highlights the loss of community and connection to nature that occurs as cities grow and become more commercialized.

@Snoopy Snoopy this is what I'm hearing:
Verse 1:
Once upon a time when we imagined,
Many years ago when time was young,
What kind of magic would you see there?
Only heaven knows.

Not so long ago there was a small town,
Suddenly a storm began to grow,
And if you look up in the sky,
It's high-rised,

Bridge 1:
The trees began to disappear,
The pub bestows a bar,
And let me tell you something dear,
This is the latest everywhere.

Chorus:
Metropolis, metropolis, You just had to be,
Metropolis, metropolis, A page in history,
Metropolis, oh what a curse, oh what a buzz, in the city,
Metropolis, just look what you've done... To me...

Verse 2:
At night there's a place with a glory,
Another place burns with a dome,
The sunset days from my hotel
have long been gone.

A beggar lies down with a rich man,
Together they dream in a pass,
And if you want the rich girl down the street,
It's high class,

Bridge 2:
The government have signed up by
your mother with your son
While people play the numbers game,
With calculators everywhere.

(Chorus )

Verse 3:
Not so long ago there was a small town,
Suddenly a storm began to grow,
And if you look up high into the sky,
It's high-rised,

(Bridge 1)

(Chorus)

Outro chorus:
Metropolis, metropolis, You just had to be,
Metropolis, metropolis, A page in history,
Metropolis, metropolis, You just had to be,
Metropolis, metropolis, just look what you've done...

Look what you've done to me!!

Sophie Rhodes

I remember hearing this once on Radio 1, in the early evening around 1980. Only time i heard it getting any airplay. Its a tremendous song, one of their best. The intro is very Stranglers, which is no bad thing. You gotta love The Motors 💖

In my opinion, Tenement Steps is one of the best albums ever! I’ve been listening to it for decades, and still love it.
This album could’ve definitely been turned into a musical, not sure why it never was. Maybe it wasn’t popular enough in the United States for people to take notice. What a shame, it would’ve been great.

Glorified Truth
