The Sun
The Naked and Famous Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here it comes,
The unavoidable sun weighs my head,
And what the hell have I done,
And you know,
I don't remember a thing
I don't remember
A thing
So I'm done,
Am I placating the notes?
Should I fault
Cut off my tongue
So you say
Apparently I'm digging it in
I can't feel
A thing

[A thing, a thing, a thing, a thing]

And you've won
So I go bury my head
In the ground
Yet I won't lose what I said
In the sound of the words and the note that it brings
No I can't feel
A thing

Here it comes
The unavoidable sun
Of what's just happened
And what's been done
And you know
I don't remember a thing
I don't remember
A thing

But it keeps on coming and I stop
But it keeps on coming and I just stand still
But it keeps on coming and I stop moving
[But it keeps coming, it keeps coming, it keeps coming]

But it keeps on coming and I stop
And it keeps on coming and I just stand still
[But it keeps coming, it keeps coming, it keeps coming]

But it keeps on coming and I stop
And it keeps on coming and I just stand still
But it keeps coming and I just stop
So I stop running and I just stop
But it keeps on coming and I just stop moving
But it keeps on coming and it keeps on coming so I just stand still
But it keeps on coming and I just stand still

And I run, and I run, and I run, and I run.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Naked and Famous's song The Sun are a portrayal of the aftermath of a night of drinking and partying. The lead singer sings about being weighed down by the unavoidable sun after a long night of partying and not remembering what happened. The lyrics suggest that whatever happened the previous night may have been something regretful or embarrassing. The singer contemplates whether to confess or to remain silent, wondering if burying the truth would placate the situation. As the weight of the consequence looms over the singer, they realize that they can't feel anything, and are stuck living with the guilt and shame.

The chorus of the song suggests that the unavoidable sun, which represents reality, is slowly catching up with the singer, and no matter how much they try to run away from it, it keeps on coming, forcing them to confront what they did or said. The repeated lines "But it keeps on coming and I just stand still" and "And I run, and I run, and I run, and I run" emphasize the internal struggle of the singer, who is unable to escape the inevitable consequences of their actions.

Overall, the lyrics to The Sun convey a feeling of helplessness and resignation to the truth. The song reflects on the fleeting moments of enjoyment that come with a night of drinking and partying, and the sobering reality that follows. The singer recognizes that they cannot outrun the truth, and must eventually face the repercussions of their actions.

This is the one song I've heard that shows what it feels like to live with any type of anxiety, depression or any mood disorder. It gets to me every time.

I remember this song being used in some art project video in which there was a dancer that was captured with 3d cameras. the 3d model of that dancer was converted into a point cloud which was then animated in all sort of ways. it seems to have vanished from the internet?
