Break Free
The New Low Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The silence is calling like a silent echo into me
You know you don't, you don't have to lose it all
Falling apart at the seams
When the darkness comes, you will hear me sing
I am breaking these chains
No more drowning or wasting away
And I know I can't come back home
Until I show I can face this on my own
(I can face)
I can face this on my own
I'm tired of feeling hopeless and deceased so easily
And honestly I'm losing my sanity
And I can still hear the way your voice sounds calling my name
You should know I won't break, no not this time
You will hear me sing
I am breaking these chains
No more drowning or wasting away
And I know I can't come back home
Until I show I can face this on my own
I just wanted to feel something more
'Cause when it rains, of course it starts to pour
And I swear in that moment I know
I can face who I was before
I am breaking these chains
No more drowning or wasting away

I am breaking and breaking
I am breaking and breaking these chains

Overall Meaning

The New Low's song "Break Free" is a powerful anthem about fighting through difficult times and being able to overcome obstacles. The opening lines, "the silence is calling like a silent echo into me," suggest a feeling of emptiness and loneliness, but the subsequent line, "you know you don't, you don't have to lose it all," implies that there is still hope and that things can still improve. The repetition of the phrase "breaking these chains" throughout the song represents the desire to break free from negative patterns and emotions and move forward.

The chorus emphasizes this sentiment with the lyrics, "No more drowning or wasting away, and I know I can't come back home until I show I can face this on my own." The singer realizes that they cannot rely on others to solve their problems for them and must take control of their own life in order to move forward. The bridge, featuring the lines "I just wanted to feel something more, 'Cause when it rains, of course, it starts to pour," touches on the struggle of feeling stuck in a cycle of negativity but ultimately ends on the hopeful note of being able to face one's past and overcome it.

Overall, "Break Free" is an empowering song about taking control of one's own life and breaking free from negative patterns and emotions.

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied, I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange, but it's true, yeah
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh, how I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So, baby, can't you see?
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free

On the last day at my old job that I really hated, I played this song out loud. I felt like such a prisoner at that job, whenever Freddie sang "oh how i want to be free" i almost started crying because I was so thankful to be quitting. That song takes me back to that moment and im so greatful.
