Dark Horse Run
The Outlaws Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my room alone with my guitar
I was learning how to play my part
At the end of every day I knew I was one step closer
And I dreamed who I'd become, as I lay there in the dark

Dark Horse run. Ain't there little bit of me in everyone
from here to the ever after
I know there's always someone faster
I may not be the chosen one,
But my spirit will never die
As I streak across this stormy sky
From the dark side of the sun
Dark horse run

I was no stranger to the shadows
Never one to stand out in a crowd
Till I found a voice inside, that led me on this journey
To stand and sing before you here and now

This long run through the darkness, to where I am has been so long
But standing here in the light is where, I know that I belong

Overall Meaning

The Outlaws' song "Run Rudolph Run" starts in a reflective tone, with the musician holed up in their room, learning how to play the guitar, always feeling like they were making progress but never quite sure what the future held. The chorus juxtaposes that uncertain tone with a sense of determination - the singer might not be the chosen one or the fastest, but they know they've got a strong spirit that will keep them going through any obstacle, like a dark horse running across the sky. The second verse reveals that the singer has always been a bit of an outsider, content to blend into the shadows until they found their own unique voice that carried them into the spotlight. It's a song about perseverance in the face of self-doubt and feeling like an underdog, channeling that energy to propel oneself forward.

One interesting fact about "Run Rudolph Run" is that it's actually a cover of a Christmas song originally performed by Chuck Berry. The Outlaws went in a completely different direction with the song, substituting the rock and roll swagger of the original with their own Southern rock sound. Another notable detail is that this song was released on an album called "Diablo Canyon," which also happened to be the title of the band's 1994 comeback album. "Run Rudolph Run" was something of a success for The Outlaws as well, charting on both the main Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. It even got some airplay on country music stations.

Another interesting fact is that The Outlaws are a band with a long and storied history, stretching back to the 1960s when they first started out as a backing band for singer-songwriter Gene Clark. They were one of the pioneering groups of the Southern rock genre in the 1970s, along with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. Their biggest hit was probably "There Goes Another Love Song," which reached #34 on the Hot 100 chart in 1975. "Run Rudolph Run" was recorded long after the band's heyday, in the early 1990s, after they had gone through numerous lineup changes. Guitarist Billy Jones, who plays on this song, is the only member of the original lineup still in the band as of this writing.
