Rattlesnake Road
The Outlaws Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Snake eyes rolling down a diamondback heart
It ain't a good roll but a place to start
She wasn't best and I wasn't the worst
If true love was water, we'd have died of thirst
Coiled in the back seat ready to strike
Love bites deep in the middle of the night
On Rattlesnake road
I'm a full moon fool when the moon comes up
Drinkin' whiskey straight from a Dixie cup
I got the top laid back and the lights turned out
Gonna find out soon what it's all about
Love is the passion, poison the sin
Straight to your heart when the fangs sink in
On Rattlesnake Road

Twistin' and turnin' outa control
Rattlesnake Road won't let go
To young to quite, to old to try
I'd sell my soul for one more ride
On Rattlesnake Road

In most states what we did was crime
She sixteen goin' on twenty nine

Well she shook me up and she rattled my chain
Then she wet me down like a drivin' rain

Overall Meaning

The Outlaws' "Rattlesnake Road" is a song that tells the story of two reckless but passionate lovers who find solace in the most unconventional setting, a smoke-filled car cruising down the winding Rattlesnake Road. The opening line introduces us to the underlying danger that permeates their relationship, as snake eyes are often associated with deceit and treachery, and diamondback refers to a venomous snake found in the American West. However, despite the ominous imagery, the singer sees their encounter as a starting point, a chance to pursue true love that has eluded them so far.

The second verse describes the singer's wild and carefree nature, as he compares himself to a full moon fool, drinking whiskey straight from a Dixie cup. The metaphorical significance of love's passion and poison is explored, as the singer realizes the inevitable pain and heartbreak that await him, but still cannot resist the lure of his lover's deadly embrace. The final verse confirms that their love is illicit, as the female protagonist is only sixteen years old, while the male protagonist is likely much older. The song ends with a sense of melancholy, as the male protagonist longs for one more ride down Rattlesnake Road with his forbidden love.

The Outlaws still persist with great, new country rock. The band, although going through changes over nearly 50 years, just doesn't give up. I've followed them since the beginning and they continue to surprise me with their new tunes, as well as how they actually perform the older ones, as well. I've seen them so many times I've lost count but, will be seeing them soon in Pa., in March. Long live The Outlaws as their spirit will remain legendary.
