Initially a solo outlet for Bruce’s music the first album, Abducting the Unicorn, was released on Cyclops Records in May 1999. The critical plaudits and small but fanatical fan base that grew around the release was enough to convince Bruce that perhaps TPT was here to stay and he returned to the Dining Room studios to work on the second TPT album, 137.
Following the reaction to its release in the spring of 2002 and the growing demand from fans for live shows, Bruce felt the need to expand TPT to a full band. The band consisted of his close musical friends – former university band mate Jon Sykes on bass, Wayne Higgins on guitars, Matt O'Leary on keyboards and Keith Harrison on drums. Wayne and Matt have since left but Steve Kitch (who co-produced and mixed the albums since 10 Stories Down) joined to replace Matt and play the keyboards.
The third album, Variations On A Dream (2004) gave TPT a further boost, reaching out to yet more people all over the world. Three albums followed, 10 Stories Down (2005), Little Man (2006), and limited the run What We Have Sown (2007) which featured re-worked un-released tracks. This was to prove to be the last album released via Cyclops before the band signed to Kscope and released Tightly Unwound. This was followed by The Dawn Raids EPs and 3000 Days, a 2CD re-mixed and re-mastered collection of songs from their ten year history so far.
The band returned in May 2010 with their new album Someone Here Is Missing. This album marked a significant step forward in the maturity of the band’s song writing and earned the band critical acclaim. In April 2011 the Thief were privileged to be invited to cover Pink Floyd's 'Money' by Mojo magazine for their cover CD tribute to the Dark Side of the Moon.
The band will release a new studio album in September 2012.

It Leads To This
The Pineapple Thief Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But it's not the half of it
Always there by your side
In the cold black center of your eyes
You made your mark, a life of toil
But that's irrelevant now
All the traces worn away
By the long march of your decay
So it leads to this
How could we get it so wrong?
For all this time, for all this progress
For all this time, for all this progress
For all this time, for all this progress
What you see is no surprise
But it's not the end of it
The future, what is left
Is right here standing by your side
So it leads to this
How could we get it so wrong?
For all this time, our so-called progress
So it leads to this
Oh, how you waited this long
For all this time, you were here with me
For all this time, you were here with me
For all this time, for all this progress
For all this time, I didn't notice you
The lyrics of The Pineapple Thief's "It Leads To This" delve into themes of realization, reflection, and regret. The opening lines, "What you see is no surprise, but it's not the half of it, always there by your side in the cold black center of your eyes," suggest a sense of familiarity and inevitability in the singer's observations. The imagery of the "cold black center" of the eyes could symbolize a sense of darkness or emptiness within oneself or in a relationship.
The mention of making a mark through a life of toil that becomes irrelevant in decay speaks to the fleeting nature of achievements and the erosion of identity over time. The idea that "all the traces worn away by the long march of your decay" paints a poignant picture of the passage of time and the gradual dissolution of one's essence or impact on the world. It reflects on the transient nature of existence and the impermanence of human endeavors.
The chorus serves as a reflective refrain on the mistakes and missteps that have led to a certain point, asking the poignant question, "How could we get it so wrong?" The repetition of "for all this time, for all this progress" highlights a sense of disappointment and disillusionment in the face of perceived failures or missed opportunities for growth and development. The repetition of these lines underscores the weight of the realization and the consequences of actions taken or not taken.
The closing verses bring a sense of closure and acceptance, acknowledging the presence of someone or something standing by one's side in the face of uncertainty and reflection. The lines "Oh, how you waited this long, for all this time, you were here with me, for all this time, I didn't notice you" convey a sense of awakening, as the singer recognizes a companion or a part of themselves that had been overlooked or taken for granted. The song ultimately reflects on the complexity of relationships, personal growth, and the importance of introspection and mindfulness in navigating life's journey.

What you see is no surprise
The current state of affairs shouldn't catch you off guard
But it's not the half of it
There's more to the situation than meets the eye
Always there by your side
Support has been a constant presence for you
In the cold black center of your eyes
Your deepest feelings and emotions lie hidden within you
You made your mark, a life of toil
You've left a lasting impact through hard work
But that's irrelevant now
Past accomplishments no longer hold importance
All the traces worn away
Evidence of your past has disappeared
By the long march of your decay
Slow deterioration has erased your history
So it leads to this
This is the inevitable outcome
How could we get it so wrong?
What led us down such a misguided path?
For all this time, for all this progress
Despite the effort and advancements made over time
What you see is no surprise
The current state of affairs shouldn't catch you off guard
But it's not the end of it
There's more to come in the future
The future, what is left
Only the unknown awaits ahead
Is right here standing by your side
It's already present, waiting to be acknowledged
Oh, how you waited this long
You've been anticipating this moment for quite some time
For all this time, you were here with me
Throughout the entire journey, you've been my companion
For all this time, I didn't notice you
I failed to recognize your constant presence
