1. The Prayer Chain was a 1990s Christian alternative rock band. The band has been called "the epitome of the Christian underground".
Their first album was recorded with Steve Hindalong at Neverland Studios and was entitled The Neverland Sessions. This was their first release, independent. After signing to Reunion Records they put out The Whirlpool EP and started touring, while focusing on their first LP Shawl released in 1993. After extensive national and international shows they started working on Mercury, which was released in 1995. This album, which engineer Chris Colbert has described by saying, "you can hear the band break up on the record, you can see them extend a warm and heartfelt middle finger to the industry" was their last CD, not to mention some rarities following. The band did a reunion show in Chicago in 1998, then the Gene Eugene tribute show in 2000, but other than some local California shows and their 2003 reunion shows at Cornerstone Festival and the Flevo Festival in The Netherlands, they are finished.

Crawl
The Prayer Chain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They all cry for Shine again
Hide yourself, hide yourself
In this winter shawl
Crawl with me
Fall with me
Promise me
Hoka hey
It's a great day to die
Embrace the arms enclosed
The Eyes of Shine
Said, it's time to come home
The lyrics of The Prayer Chain's "Crawl" convey a sense of melancholy and longing, perhaps for better times that have passed or for someone who is no longer present. The opening lines, "It looks like rain again / They all cry for Shine again," suggest a sense of futility or hopelessness, as if the rain is a metaphor for something dark and oppressive, while "Shine" represents a brighter, more hopeful time. The repetition of the phrase "hide yourself" further emphasizes this theme of hiding or seeking refuge from something menacing.
As the song progresses, the singer seems to be addressing someone directly, asking them to "crawl" and "fall" with them. There is a sense of intimacy and shared experience, as if the struggles and pain they are facing are something they must endure together. The repetition of "Shine is Dead" is particularly haunting, suggesting that this brighter time or happier state of being has been lost forever.
The phrase "Hoka hey," which means "today is a good day to die" in Lakota, adds an element of Native American spirituality to the song. This phrase is often used as a battle cry or to express a willingness to face death with honor and bravery, suggesting the singer is ready to face whatever trials or tribulations lie ahead. The idea of embracing "the arms enclosed / The Eyes of Shine" is particularly enigmatic, perhaps referring to a supernatural or divine presence that is watching over them.
Overall, "Crawl" is a powerful and evocative song, with lyrics that suggest a deep sense of sorrow, longing, and ultimately, acceptance. The repeated phrases and haunting melodies create a sense of urgency and emotional intensity that lingers long after the song has ended.
