Twenty Flight Rock
The Quarrymen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh, well I got a girl with a record machine
When it comes to rockin' she's the queen
We love to dance on a Saturday night
All alone where I can hold her tight
But she lives on the twentiest floor uptown
The elevator's broken down

So I walked one, two flight, three flight, four
Five, six, seven flight, eight flight, more
Up on the twelfth I started to drag
Fifteenth floor I'm a-ready to sag
Get to the top, I'm too tired to rock

When she calls me up on the telephone
Say, come on over honey, I'm all alone
I said, baby you're mighty sweet
But I'm in bed with the achin' feet
This went on for a couple of days
But I couldn't stay away
Well they sent to Chicago for repairs
Till it's a-fixed I'm a-usin' the stairs
Hope they hurry up before it's too late

Want my baby too much to wait
All this climbin' is a-gettin' me down

They'll find my corpse draped over a rail
But I climbed one, two flight, three flight four

Overall Meaning

Twenty Flight Rock is a song about a young man who has a girlfriend who lives on the 20th floor uptown. She loves to dance on a Saturday night, but since the elevator is broken down, the singer of the song has to climb up the stairs to see her. He describes how he climbs one flight of stairs after another, feeling more and more tired as he reaches the higher floors. When his girlfriend calls him up to invite him over, he is too tired from all the climbing to go, even though he wants to be with her. Eventually, he hopes that the elevator will be fixed before it's too late, or he will be found dead on the stairs.

There are a few ways to interpret the lyrics of the song. Some people might see it as a lighthearted tale of a young man's love for his girlfriend, and the obstacles he's willing to overcome to be with her. Others might see it as a commentary on the difficulties and frustrations of urban life, where even the most basic things, like an elevator in a high-rise apartment building, can break down and cause major inconvenience. Still others might read it as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pushing oneself too hard, physically and emotionally, in the pursuit of love.
