As Time Goes By
The Rat Pack Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension,
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.
Yet we get a trifle weary
With mr. einstein's theory,
So we must get down to earth at times:
And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved,
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.
Refrain
You must remember this,
A kiss is still a kiss,
A sigh is just a sigh;
The fundamental things apply,
As time goes by.
And when two lovers woo,
They still say, "I love you,"
On that you can rely;
No matter what the future brings,
As time goes by.
Moonlight and love songs never out of date,
Hearts full of passion, jealousy, and hate;
Woman needs man and man must have his mate,
That no one can deny.
It's still the same old story,
A fight for love and glory,
A case of do or die;
The world will always welcome lovers,
As time goes by.
The Rat Pack's song As Time Goes By expresses the sentiment that even though the advancements of technology and scientific theories can be overwhelming and tiring, the fundamental things in life remain constant. The song also alludes to the fact that love is timeless and will always be a significant aspect of life, regardless of any advancements or changes in society.
The verse suggests that while we may find ourselves becoming fatigued with the constant progression of life, we must also remember to take breaks and focus on the simple things in life. The mention of Einstein's theory refers to the widespread adoption of the theory of relativity during the time the song was written. It implies that even with ground-breaking scientific discoveries, we need to take a step back and appreciate the essential things that keep us grounded.
The refrain serves as a reminder that despite any changes that society may go through, the fundamental things in life remain the same. The chorus depicts the beauty in the pure and natural experiences of love found in the everyday moments. As time progresses, the manifestation of love may change, but love never changes, and the affection and dedication of two lovers will always remain the same.

His voice, for all the powerhouse orchestras he fairly conducted himself with waves of his hand on stage, was showcased best by Al Viola and Bill Miller, or by just a guitarist or pianist with a relaxed style.
Michael Chapman
Al Viola used to perform with Jazz pianist, Page Cavanaugh at LA's SFV Monteleone's West Jazz supper club for yrs & I'd often request a Sinatra ballad that Al would play beautifully with Page Cavanaugh & Burbank Bill Miller, Sinatra's longtime pianist when He wasn't on tour with Sinatra was often seated a few barstools away from me at another LA Jazz supper club in LA's Toluca Lake, The Money Tree on Riverside Dr. & 'needless to say, being a Sinatra fan since I was 8-9 years old- I was on Cloud 9 & Thrilled to be in the presence of these Fabulous musicians in a supper club setting
