The War of All Against All
The Receiving End of Sirens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look alive, gentlemen
Or fake your deaths; your wounds undressed beneath your costumes.
Some are so well rehearsed
For hearses it hurts, always the first to wave the white flag
And barricade themselves
In false pretenses, fox holed in trenches.
Forged casualties with casual pleas,
Dying to please the enemy
We die to stay alive, We kill to survive

We are the corps of corpses,
We are up in arms and armed
Bring all the king's horses and all the king's men

Push on, plod on, these legs like pistons pumping forward motion.
Convalescent men in uniform.
We have fallen to friendly fire, shrapnel freckles our spine.
Still our feet fall one by one.

We were led to lead lovers, while marching to the beat.
We were led to lead lovers, we kissed so well.

The cannon's calling our name,
I hear her singing to me
In morse code,
"This is our revolution!
To arms! To arms!
This is a revolution!"

We are the corps of corpses,
We are up in arms and armed.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Receiving End of Sirens' song The War of All Against All describe a war-like atmosphere where soldiers are faced with a life or death situation. The song begins with a call to remain alert and ready for battle or, alternatively, to fake one's own death and hide disguised as a corpse. The soldiers in this war are quick to surrender, always the first to wave the white flag, and barricade themselves in false pretenses. They forge casualties to try and deceive the enemy, but ultimately, they are dying to please them.

The second verse describes the soldiers pushing onward despite facing difficulties. They are convalescing and have already fallen to friendly fire, yet they continue to march forward. The song touches on being led to lead lovers while marching to the beat, perhaps a nod to the idea of soldiers being motivated by the thought of returning to their loved ones. The chorus repeats the phrase, we are the corps of corpses, and we are up in arms and armed. The song ends with the sound of a cannon and a call to arms, a revolution, signaling the never-ending cycle of war.

This is one of my favorites by them! 😍 The outro makes me hum and sing every time, even if I can’t clarify on what they’re saying!

I remember seeing them at a crappy storage unit used as a recording studio/music venue in Virginia summer of 2005, I was 17. Usually just local bands played there but sometimes touring bands would come. I'll never forget they opened with this song and barely got through the intro when the power went out. I thought they would just leave because it was an audience of maybe 30 people but they stayed. Eventually the problem was fixed and they played an amazing set.
