Flee the Factory
The Receiving End of Sirens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One hoped they'd break the patent when they die cast me in stride.
(One hoped they'd break the mold.)
Just a simple steel specimen, truly empty down inside.
With copper-core wound veins, a pumping cold hydraulic heart,
Bellows cycle air on rhythms, rhythms fixed within my code.

It's easier to bow than keep these knees locked tight;
Tight like the rivets in my skin.
My pulse reverberates through this malleable shell,
With scars from shaping.

My insides grind their gears.
Abrasive churning, I'm so conductive.
It's always been a task with such low impedance.
My tendons tend to rust with time while wires misplace their currents
So I will flee the factory, and pray you to dismantle me.

Someone find my maker; I'm coming apart at the seams.
I'll cauterize myself back together again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Receiving End of Sirens's song Flee the Factory, while obscure, seem to express feelings of being trapped in a mechanical body or industrial world. The first two lines of the song suggest that the singer hopes to break free of their preconceived role as a product of their environment or a creation of someone else's design. They describe themselves as a "simple steel specimen" who is "empty down inside," indicating a lack of agency or self-determination.

The next lines paint a picture of a mechanized body that still functions in a biological way, with veins and a heart that pumps cold hydraulic fluid. The singer notes that their movements are controlled by "rhythms fixed within my code," again emphasizing their lack of autonomy. They describe their physical body as a "malleable shell" held together by metal rivets that are "tight" like their locked knees. The scars from these rivets indicate that their body has been shaped and molded to fit some preconceived idea of what they should be.

The final lines of the song reveal the singer's desire to break free from this mechanical existence and be dismantled by their maker. They note that their "tendons tend to rust" while their "wires misplace their currents," indicating that their body is not functioning properly. They ask someone to "find their maker" so they can be put back together again.

Overall, the lyrics to Flee the Factory suggest a longing to break free from the constraints of mechanization and find true freedom and agency.

I had that same discovery recently too :) Amazing that I was literally always listening to Anthony Green; Circa Survive ended up being my favorite band.

This whole record had a lot going on so mixing it must have been tough. Computer elements, three guitars, 3 singers, etc. With that in mind, you can hear Anthony harmonizing at 3:50. I also think he’s harmonizing at the end of each chorus 3:00. Cheers!

Side note: He’s also in Epilogue when the song finally climaxes. You can hear him screaming. ☺️
