Moisture
The Residents Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone saw a strange amount
Of moisture on her lips
And it was also seen upon
Her arms and on her hips

No one knows exactly
Who she was or how she died
But when they opened up her purse
They found a snail inside

Overall Meaning

The Residents are known for writing surrealist lyrics that leave a lot of room for interpretation. "Moisture" is no exception. The song begins with the observation of an unknown woman who is covered in moisture in strange places like her lips, arms, and hips. This could be interpreted as a symbol for sexuality or allure, especially since the woman is unknown and her death is a mystery. The use of moistness could be interpreted as a metaphor for sensuality, specifically female sensuality, which is often associated with wetness. The fact that the woman's death is unknown adds to the unease of the song, as if it is a warning about the dangers of giving into one's primal desires.

The chorus does not provide much clarity: "Moisture, moisture, Moisture, moisture, Moisture, moisture, Moisture, moisture." It is repeated four times and could be interpreted as a meditation on the woman's state or a commentary on the uncomfortable underbelly of desire. The final verse reveals that there was a snail in the woman's purse when she died. This could be interpreted in many ways, but one interpretation is that the snail is a symbol for something that is slow-moving or unassuming, like desire or temptation. The fact that it was in her purse suggests that it was something she carried around with her, perhaps the weight of her own sensuality. All in all, "Moisture" is a cryptic song that leaves a lot to the imagination but hints at deeply rooted human urges.

LANDO ORCHESTRAGLOBOLA TV - 20 anni di insuccessi

That's not Snakefinger's sound. It sounds more like Fred Frith is playing... which would make perfect sense.

This just isn't the same without being featured sporadically alongside Laibach, Einsturzende Neubauten and half of some creepy John Waters' film on a static-ridden VHS picked up for free at a yard sale.
