Justine

Justine, Justine
Yeah, you just don't treat me right

Justine, Justine
You just don't treat me right
You like to ball in the mornin'
And stay out late at night

Goin' to the barber shop
Gonna have them do me up
Gonna get clean for my little buttercup

Justine, Justine
Yeah, you just don't treat me right
You like to ball in the mornin'
And stay out late at night

Hey, ho
Hey, ho
Ho

Justine, Justine
Justine, Justine
You like to ball in the mornin'
And stay out late at night

Do you feel all right?
(Yes, I feel all right)
Do you feel all right now, yeah?
(Yes, I feel all right)
I wanna know, I wanna know, yeah, yeah
(Yes, I feel all right)

Do you feel all right now?
(Yes, I feel all right)
Do you feel all right?
(Yes, I feel all right)
Do you feel all right, yeah?
(Yes, I feel all right)

Goin' to the barber shop
Gonna have them do me up
Gonna get clean for my little buttercup

Justine, Justine
Yeah, you just don't treat me right
You like to ball in the mornin'
And stay out late at night

Justine, Justine
Justine, Justine
Justine, Justine

Justine, Justine
You like to ball in the mornin'

And stay out late at night
Hey

Overall Meaning

The song "Justine" by The Righteous Brothers is a lament about a relationship where the singer is not treated well by Justine. The lyrics express his frustration that she likes to party all night and sleep during the day, while he tries to keep a clean image for her. He’s going to the barber to groom and look good for her, but Justine doesn't seem to appreciate his efforts, and their relationship seems to be going downhill. Despite this, the chorus is upbeat, repeating the name "Justine" and ending with a chant of "Hey ho", giving the feeling that the singer is in a state of resigned acceptance of his situation. The song ends with him still questioning if Justine feels all right and with his continued attempts to groom himself in the hope of winning her over.

One interpretation of the lyrics is that they reflect the social norms of the time, where women were expected to be demure and stay indoors, while men were expected to be the breadwinners and providers, and maintain a good appearance. Justine, however, does not conform to these gender roles, and the singer of the song feels that she is not treating him right by staying out late and partying, while he has to keep up appearances for her.

@user-kd3ic6do5n

They Also sang this right at the end of the film called the Endless Summer, looking so handsome in matching pinstripe jackets, with some strange interaction between them I can't quite work out... but well worth looking for.

@Justine175

Finally a version of this song that I can put in my favorites--the sound is great--thanks for posting

@thecoolestdad

My mother had the original album from the movie Endless Summer, that the Righteous Brothers were in. It had this song on it. I acquired it, but lost all of my albums years ago. I recently found this album at a Goodwill in excellent shape. The cover was great and the vinyl was in great condition. Albums at Goodwill are $1.01. Yeah, what's the one cent for? I bought it.

@57MrWill

In my opinion, the stuff they recorded for Moonglow was their best. This is a case in point!

@justinehodges5089

Trying to love this being a Justine myself!
