(Ursula Rucker:)

I the beginning
It was me
I was rhythm
I was life
Two turntables
And one m-...

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of The Roots' song Phrentrow feature the spoken-word artist Ursula Rucker, who describes in a poetic fashion the origins of music and how it was embodied by her. She likens herself to the very essence of rhythm and life itself, demonstrating the crucial role music plays within our lives. Her words embody the idea that music is not just something to be consumed but rather a fundamental aspect of our nature.

The phrase "Two turntables and one m-..." is where Ursula's spoken-word piece ends, and Questlove's drumming takes over, marking the beginning of an instrumental track that comprises the rest of the song. The phrase is cut off before a complete thought is formed, adding to the mystery of the song's message. The instrumental section that follows is a tribute to the classic hip-hop DJ setup of two turntables and a microphone (or "m-...") and the crucial role they played in the genre's early days.
