The band emerged in Los Angeles' first wave of punk rock in the 1970s. The label "techno-punk" was applied to the band by the Los Angeles Times in 1978, and they are widely cited as the pioneers of a genre now known as "synthpunk." The Screamers were notable for their use of synthesizers in place of guitars, and for a highly developed theatrical presentation that centered around a manic lead vocalist, Tomata du Plenty, whose stage persona one early commentator described as "a psychotic Mickey Rooney." Though they developed a substantial following and generated considerable press coverage, the Screamers never released a record. Jello Biafra, lead singer of Dead Kennedys, once declared the Screamers to be "the best unrecorded band in the history of rock 'n roll."
The band disbanded in 1981.

I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I cover my eyes
I reach out ahead
I touch a face
And that face keeps pounding my brain
Pounding my brain
Pounding my brain
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I try to sleep
And i try to dream
But i keep on itchin
And then i start squeezing
And the more i squeeze
The more it hurts
But i keep on squeezing
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
If you build a wall
You'll be safe at night
You won't see me
But i'll spy on you
See you wash your hands
See you turn out the lights
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
I wanna hurt
Hurt
Hurt
I wanna love
I wanna love
Love
I wanna love
I wanna love
I wanna love
I wanna love

Compelling. Like passing a wreck on the road. I wanna look away but I keep staring. Every song I've heard by this band is like that. Very cool.

rip Tomatu. I gave them the spot on my backpatch because there can be none greater. Even scratchy bootlegs are sufficient to show me that no band can compare to the genius of the Screamers.

That Under the Big Black Sun book features about 20 essays on early L.A. punk and The Screamers are mentioned over and over, primarily for their legendary shows at The Masque in Hollywood in 1977 and 1978. The Masque was a concrete bunker basement below the Pussycat Porno Theater in Hollywood.

Perfect venue for awesome.

So simple. But yet it gets the point across...Amazing really.

its funny how corny tomata came off to me sometimes but its especially astounding in this song because its slow corny/whimsical rhythm is so contrary to how thrashing their music mostly is. its haunting the aspect- the desire for affection no matter how vain or shallow. the sweeping synth sounds lends to that hollow feeling while the odd rhythm just kinda tugs you along as if marching from hurt to hurt like burning our hands from stove to stove and wondering why our hands hurt and protesting as if we dont deserve it.
i admire your comment tremendously even though it is probably lost in time.

All these years later and still pioneering music yet to come. FKing brilliant!
