The song was originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon. Other hit versions of the song were recorded by The Searchers, Cher, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Stevie Nicks, Willie DeVille, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Smokie and by the Ramones.
The Searchers version (1964)The Searchers heard British performer Cliff Bennett perform "Needles and Pins" at a club in Hamburg, Germany[citation needed], and instantly wanted it to be their next single. The Pye Records single was released in January 1964. It was number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa and peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the United States. Soon after, in April 1964, "Needles and Pins" appeared on the Searchers' next album, It's the Searchers.
Audible during the Searchers' recording of "Needles and Pins" is a faulty bass drum pedal, which squeaks throughout the song. It is particularly noticeable during the opening of the number.
Part of The Searchers' version can be heard as the intro of the song "Use the Man" from American thrash metal band Megadeth.

Needles and Pins
The Searchers Lyrics

I had to run away, and get down on my knees and pray that they'd go away
But still they'd begin, needles and pins
Because of all my pride, the tears I gotta hide
Hey I thought I was smart, I'd won her heart
Didn't think I'd do, but now I see
She's worse to him than me, let her go ahead
Just how to say please, and get down on her knees
Hey that's how it begins, she'll feel those needles and pins
A-hurtin' her, a-hurtin' her
Why can't I stop and tell myself I'm wrong, I'm wrong, so wrong
Why can't I stand up and tell myself I'm strong
Because I saw her today, I saw her face, it was a face I loved, and I knew
I had to run away, and get down on my knees and pray that they'd go away
But still they'd begin needles and pins
Because of all my pride, the tears I gotta hide
Oh needles and pins, needles and pins, needles and pins
The Searchers’ “Needles and Pins” is a song about heartbreak, jealousy, and regret. The singer is haunted by the memory of a woman he once loved and lost. He sees her again and realizes that he still loves her, but she has moved on with another man. He tries to convince himself that he is better off without her, but he cannot help feeling the pain of seeing her with someone else. The title “Needles and Pins” describes the emotional pain that he feels, like being pricked by sharp objects.
The song has a driving beat and up-tempo rhythm that belies the sadness of its lyrics. The singer is resigned to his fate but still cannot help feeling hurt and jealous. He realizes that he cannot control the past or the future, and must come to terms with his own feelings of loss and despair.
“Needles and Pins” was written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono, and was first recorded by Jackie DeShannon in 1963. The Searchers’ version was released in 1964, and became a hit in the US and UK. The song has been covered by many other artists over the years, including Tom Petty, Smokie, The Ramones, and Bruce Springsteen.

I love these old live performances. No crazy lights, or choreographed dancers, or backing tracks or even metronomes. Just four well dressed guys with their instruments and voices making great music.
