Pressed in a Book
The Shins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Doted on like seeds planted in rows
The untied shoelaces of your life
Nurtured all year, then pressed in a book
Or displayed in bad taste at the table
Problems arise and you fan the fire
While there's a wild pack of dogs loose in your house tonight
Cut you from bad cloth or soiled like socks
Add it up and basically people never change

They just talk and make plans in the dark
Or make haste with ideas that can't help
But creep good people out
As you talk to me too much, you're assuming
We don't always want what's right

Did I strike the right set of chords? You're annoyed
The goal is to ignite you, then move on
You feel ill at ease, you got no squeeze
And the wise cracks won't make you more stable
You've learned you lines to scale and to time
Why must I remind you now I'm only less able
Cut from bad cloth or soiled like socks
We're ordinary people, we can't help but to change

As we walk and make plans in the dark
Or make haste with the boy who can't help
But creep good people out
As you talk to me too much, you're assuming
We don't always want what's right

Two fallen saplings in an open field
Snow padding gently on an empty bench
An old woman's jewelry lying unadorned
Coal nesting robins allied for the first time

I know when you hear these sappy lines
You'll roll your eyes and say, "nice try"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Pressed in a Book" by The Shins explore the theme of change and the limitations of human nature. The verses start with the imagery of something being nurtured, such as planted rows of seeds, which suggests growth and development. However, the second line contradicts this image with the metaphor of "untied shoelaces" which implies carelessness and imperfection. This contrast sets the tone for the rest of the song, which oscillates between hopefulness and cynicism.

The chorus of the song asserts that people never change completely, only superficially. They can talk and make plans, but they remain essentially the same. This is reinforced by the metaphor of being "cut from bad cloth or soiled like socks," which suggests inherent flaws that cannot be fixed. The second verse explores the frustration of this truth, with the lyrics "As you talk to me too much, you're assuming / We don't always want what's right." The singer seems to be telling someone that they are presuming to know what is best for others, but they are not always correct.

The final stanza of the song returns to the imagery of the first verse, with snapshots of nature that suggest both beauty and melancholy. The final lines are self-aware, acknowledging that the message of the song may be dismissed as sentimental or trite. Overall, "Pressed in a Book" is a contemplative, introspective song that explores the human experience with a mix of poetry and cynicism.

For me this album is the pinnacle of „classic-indie-rock“. It might not be the most innovative or original record but it is beautiful and perfect :) One of my all time favs!

This song was underrated then and is underrated now, but I love the shins!!!

A Known Enemy

The Shins are great at being able to create vivid images in people's minds with their music. Very difficult to do, but the Shins are just that great!

LYRICS NOW! this guy writes amazing lyrics!!

Alex Murray

I love these guys!! Two complaints though, 1)the lyrics are almost impossible to figure out which can be really cool don't get me wrong, but when I'm humming 'em in school I'd much rather be singing the words. 2) they should make longer songs!!!
