New Slang
by The Shins

Gold teeth and a curse for this town
Were all in my mouth
Only, I don't know how they got out, dear
Turn me back into the pet
I was when we met
I was happier then with no mindset

And if you'd took to me like a
Gull takes to the wind
Oh, I'd a-jumped from my trees
And I'd a-danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would have fared well

New slang when you notice the stripes
The dirt in your fries
Hope it's right when you die, old and bony
Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall
Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely

And if you'd took to me like a
Gull takes to the wind
Well, I'd a-jumped from my trees
And I'd a-danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would have fared well

Godspeed, all the bakers at dawn
May they all cut their thumbs
And bleed into their buns 'til they melt away

I'm lookin' in on the good life
I might be doomed never to find
Without a trust or flaming fields
Am I too dumb to refine?
And if you took to me like, well
I'd a-danced like the queen of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would have fared well

Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth.
Only I don't know how they got out, dear.
Turn me back into the pet I was when we met.
I was happier then with no mind-set.

And if you'd 'a took to me like a gull takes to the wind.
Well, I'd 'a jumped from my tree
And I'd 'a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.
Hope it's right when you die, old and bony.
Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall,
Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely.

And if you'd 'a took to me like a gull takes to the wind.
Well, I'd 'a jumped from my tree
And I'd 'a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

God speed all the bakers at dawn
May they all cut their thumbs,
And bleed into their buns 'til they melt away.

I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find.
Without a trust or flaming fields am I too dumb to refine?

And if you'd 'a took to me like
I'd 'a danced like the queen of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

Edit: I come back three years later to find that over 350 beautiful people liked these amazing lyrics. Thank you all so much <3

Kurt Hoffmann

Thank you. My golden age of music was punk in the early 80s when half the experience was reading the lyrics as you listened to the music, being blown away by both the sound and the words. I love this song.

Why are you thanking people for liking something written by someone else?

Chris Kelleher

Amazed at how lyrics are set to music.
Love the electric 🎸 guitar here.
I guess if he sang like B. Streisand we would hear the lyrics clearly but the 🎶 music wouldn't be the best.
👍 The Shins.

Kathy Myers

Quackers N’ Cheese just found this gem of a tune and lyrics too. I do thank you. Just beautiful. Longing to be young again.

The shins were nostalgic before nostalgia became aesthetic...

People who use the word aesthetic deserve bad things

@Tove I'm aesthetic for a time when people knew how to correctly use the word 'nostalgic'...
