1959
The Sisters of Mercy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living as an angel in the
Place that I was born
Living on air
Living in heaven
Giving the lie down, the line
To the
There's my heaven
And I know
Which way the wind blows
In nineteen fifty-nine

Which way the wind blows
In nineteen fifty-nine

And the wind blows still
And the wind blows wild again
For a little child can never kill this clean
This way
And it feels like me today
Tell me
Do you feel the same?
Isabelle?
Or do you feel like nineteen fifty-nine?
...Do you feel like nineteen fifty-nine?

And the wind blows wild again
And the wind blows wild

In nineteen fifty-nine
In fifty-nine
Isabelle
Do you, do you fell the same?

Come with me
Like a little child
Like another gun
Like homeless, restless, known to none, like
Way beyond the line

Like it never was
In nineteen fifty-nine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Sisters of Mercy’s song “1959” are quite cryptic, but the song seems to be about someone who is living in their own version of heaven, untouched by the troubles of the world. The song seems to be set in 1959, which was a time when many significant events were taking place around the world, including the Cold War, Elvis Presley’s induction into the army, and the first Barbie doll being introduced. However, the singer seems to be disconnected from these events, living in their own little world.

The lyrics also reference a person named Isabelle, who may be someone the singer is trying to connect with. However, they wonder if Isabelle feels the same way they do, disconnected from the world around them.

Overall, the song seems to be about escapism and disconnection from reality, a theme that is common in The Sisters of Mercy’s music.

Do you feel the same... Isabelle? Simply beautiful - his talent as a songwriter was never truly appreciated... except by the few.

@TheGottkaiserin

Yes, I feel the same

Omfg.....next time I get a black cat, if it's a girl, I'm gonna name her Isabelle to pay homage to this song, and I would love to adopt Isabelle while she is an adult, because I think adopting young kittens would be pretty hard work, especially considering how I have a tuxedo cat and a black cat. Funny, right?

This makes me cry... was my Late brother's favorite band, he was a true Goth, not an Emo wannabe...
died tragically in 2003 at age 30... Vaughan Robinson will be missed and remembered by this music....
SOM, The MIssion, Fields of the Nephilim, rosetta stone etc...

@cliqzyxbl

rest in peace to your brother <3
