The group has released three original studio albums: First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987), and Vision Thing (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members.
The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, whom they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets.
Former members of the group established the bands Ghost Dance and The Mission.

Twenty-five floors and I need more
I'm looking for the can in the candy store
Two thousand Hamburg four
And colours I ain't seen before
It's a small world and it smells funny
I'd buy another if it wasn't for the money
Take back what I paid
In a long black car
With the prettiest shit
From Panama
When the sirens wail
And the lights flash blue
My vision thing come
Slamming through
It's a small world and it smells bad
I'd buy another if I had
Back
What I paid
For another motherfucker in a motorcade
Slamming through
Slamming through
What do wee need to make our world come alive?
What does it take to make us sing?
While we're waiting for the next one to arrive?
One million points of light
One billion dollar Vision Thing
Another black hole in the killing zone
A little more mad in the methedrome
One blinding flash of sense
Just like the president's
Well, I don't mind
Out of my mind
Blizzard king
Bring it on home
It's a small world and it smells bad
I'd buy another if I had
Back
What I paid
For another motherfucker in a motorcade
And a vision thing
And a vision thing
And a ...

The lyrics of The Sisters of Mercy's song "Vision Thing" are a reflection of the social and political disillusionment of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The repetitive use of the phrase "It's a small world and it smells bad" suggests a feeling of claustrophobia and disgust with society. The twenty-five whores in the room next door and the reference to the methedrome, a venue for illegal races, highlight the darker side of urban life. The singer is looking for an escape, represented by the "can" in the candy store or the elusive "colours" that he hasn’t seen before. The vision thing, an illusion or a dream, comes crashing through, providing temporary relief from reality.
The song's title, "Vision Thing," is a reference to a statement made by former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. He used the phrase "a vision thing" to describe his difficulty in communicating his vision for the future to the American public, and The Sisters of Mercy adopted it as the title for their song, using it as a metaphor for the politicians’ inability to provide a brighter future for their constituents.
