The Island
The Skints Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear anyone who hears this
I'm trapped upon the island
The natives have gone wild and
They're making bad decisions
Very bad decisions
It might be what you fed them
It might be what you read them
On the news at 10 cos
They don't play well with others
And can't process different colours
You'd best batten down the hatches
With fry ups and football matches
And imperial restoration
Why are you proud of the nation?
Little England not Great Britain
I am trapped upon the island

And where are our fearless leaders?
They surely won't deceive us
With climate change deniers
And Noah's Ark believers
There's polar bears in Scotland
There's vampires in London
There's dinosaurs across the UK
That I'd hoped had gone extinct

And I can't believe it
Or maybe I can
I never did put it past you
What have you done?
You idiots, what have you gone and done?
I'm trapped upon the island

Ha ha whose idea was this?
Cos I feel the joke is over
But he's only done a runner
And sold you down the river
So let's hope you're a good swimmer
And let's hope you don't eat dinner

Let's hope you don't need nothing else
Because you're dying in your own shit

Overall Meaning

The Skints's "The Island" critiques contemporary British society and politics. The singer is trapped on an island where the natives have gone wild and are making bad decisions. The singer implies that these bad decisions have been brought on by media and political propaganda--what the natives have been fed and what they've been told to believe. Additionally, the singer calls out the shortsighted and self-serving leaders who deny climate change and propagate false beliefs. The last lines of the song, "Let's hope you don't need nothing else / Because you're dying in your own shit," suggest that the current state of Britain is unsustainable and will lead to disaster.

The song's lyrics express disillusionment with contemporary Britain and its politics. The singer critiques the media and propaganda that have caused the natives to make bad decisions. Additionally, the singer calls out politicians who disregard scientific consensus regarding climate change and perpetuate false beliefs. The overarching message of the song is that contemporary Britain is unsustainable and will lead to disaster if its citizens and leaders do not take action.

Incredible god given souls ! Went to see Gentleman’s Dub club at Camden roundhouse last night , didn’t know who the they were , , captured and mesmerised by them;. Didn’t buy a cd from the merch , ( just a GDC one ) gutted I didn’t buy something from their catalogue of magic, I did bring back an incredible joy inside that I’ve experienced such joy being in the same room as them . Brilliant expression and execution of god given talent . Thank you GDC for bringing them to my attention , if I hadn’t of had you knock my socks off at a UB40 gig I wouldn’t of been in the roundhouse in Camden last night and witnessed such joy . Thank you .
